Notes

NOTE : there are 4 outfits, the Bonnet and Turkish Fez pictured on pattern page; the Tyrolean Hat and French Sailor are on the leaflet’s front cover colour photo (click leaflet name to see).

Use thin primrose cotton doubled. I’m going by the yardage of the pattern yarn to match modern yarnweights.
gauge 6 sc 1” and 8 rows 1”
Adjust hook if necessary.

Yellow before : 44.58 and 16.58 gr
Blue 7.32, lt. blue 5.28 gr (not used).

March 19
Doubled yarn and 2 mm hook gives a far too stiff fabric with 9 sc / 1”
Single yarn and 3.5 mm hook is 6 sc / 1”, but flimsy-ish.
Will use 3.25 mm D hook, since pattern pieces are worked to diameter and length, not st. count. A slightly smaller wing will still look OK.

March 24th
Eyeballing the Body, crocheted to 2” diameter instead of 1 3/4 given in pattern - I have a feeling eggs are a bit larger these days than in the 1960s. (Nope).
At my gauge this works out to 44 sc in the 10th round. Now working even.

March 25th
Tried it on an egg - bit roomy.
Making the 2nd one only 41 sc’s, working even after 9th round.
April 4th
Turn and sl. st. final round when 19 rnds of sc’s completed, counting from start.

Scraps of orange Perlé 5 cotton for beaks.
Didn’t find the Sailor’s hat photo until after I’d attached the white - knotted white should’ve lain on top with ends sticking out in 2 directions. Jaunty tassel-like topknot for me !

Bonnet improvised - this yarn is Sport, much heavier. I’d crocheted one following the pattern - far too low stitch count to work with final row. I ripped, then re-made a similar fan shape with MR and dc’s, same picot edge final row.
Started with dc in magic ring, join, then same st. count dc’s for Round 2, join, creating a bowl-shape. Then start the fan by leaving a few dc’s unworked, working flat, increasing in Row 4 and 5 to get … sts.

2 lengths (20 cm / 8”each) of red satin ribbon sewn to Row 3, sequins on outside. I used the sewing thread to attach it to the head - purple yarn far too thick.

Had to iron the wings as they curled too much.
Photo shoot with eggs, the 41-sts size (wearing bonnet) was too small for the larger egg !

2022: one given to re-sale shop,
2023: girl chick given to LYS.

(since they were fun and challenging to make, but I’d never used them).
