On holiday in Barcelona, I could not resist buying some speckles…
but back home, I was rummaging through the stash and come up with a dark and moody purple combination. Oh well, still some time to decide.

September 25, 2017

First swatch with my speckled yarns, not too happy. The fade from 2 speckles to one semisolid is too abrupt. I added a pale blue araucania instead, and I like that one better. I am just not sure if I would actually wear it..

My speckled yarns are very lightweight. THe Swatch feels flimsy. I swatched with slighty heavier yarns, and I like the drape and feel better.
The purple Swatch is mostly Wollmeise, the blue Swatch Indigodragonfly and two Dutch dyers (Dutchwooldiva and schaap&draak).
I am not sure if I like the green on my blue Swatch. I should use a medium teal yarn to get a good fade, but I don’t have that color in my stash. I do have a lot of Royal blue leftovers!
Hope, that won’t work. The purple combination looks more harmonious. So, purple it is!

After seeing the first clue, I decided on my contrastcolors, all Wollmeise. It’s going to be a huge, striped shawl. I want it less stripey. I am going for mostly purple pops, with a bit of green and gold.

I am not sure that I like my colors…. MC2 is Wollmeise Mauerblümchen, sand with dark lilac. The sand is just too brown for my taste. I liked it in my swatch, but not in a big piece of knitting… I think I will frog.
I did find some Wollmeise color Igor in stash, a very dark burgundy. I think this might work, but it’s only a leftover (40 gram). I also found a dark Burgundy Koigu.
I will see how the pattern evolves before I decide what to do next.
Project is stalled for the time being…

Frogged and restarted. I liked the Mauerblümchen in the striped parts, and decided to use this troughout, combined with other colors.

Now I have:

  • 10 wedges knitting in the Nashville night (=purple)
  • 5 wedges knitting in the Nashville + Mauerblümchen (=sand/lilac) striped
  • 5 wedges petit poisson n°5 (= pink/lilac) and Mauerblümchen striped
  • 5 wedges Petit Poisson n°5
  • 5 wedges Igor (=purple/sand) and Mauerblümchen striped
  • 5 wedges Igor Totally different from the pattern’s intent, but I like it! I think I will end with purple again. I am not too fond of the ending on a dark color, I would like to repeat the light color from the start. That will look more balanced to my taste…

I do like the border that is in the pattern, with the brioche and the big holes, but I would preferr it as an exuberant ending of a very simple shawl. I decided to finish this shawl by simply knitting 8 rows in purple, and do a picot cast-off. Now to find a nice pin to wear it…
