swatching for the KAL…the yarn is a gradient set of mini-skeins, bought in New-Zealand

My swatch gave me 24 stitches and 32 rows on US3 needles (3.25mm), so good to go.
Unfortunately, my dpn’s are very short, and my stitches keep sliding off the needles. After knitting the first tuck, it looks rather large for my 54cm head.
I just measured: I have a 55cm hat now. Not good. I’ll try again with a 3mm circular needle, for a better gauge.

I found out why the hat came out too large: I had cast on too many stitches (122 instead of 112). I have started over, this time with the correct amount of stitches… And I also bought a shorter cirucular needle, that made the knitting much easier!

I am the point where I need to switch to dpn’s, and to the darkest yarn. It’s getting harder to do this right.

FO: very pleased with the outcome, but boy, were those last rows hard. It’s the perfect shape for me: slouchie beanie, but with the tucks it adds visual interest. I am also pleased with the gradient colors. I left out the brownish grey, and thought that I could use it at the crown, but did not need to. Hat weighs 125gr.
Oh, and I used exactly five shades of grey…
