I was not confident the hat would be large enough at 76 sts. (I knit tightly, but even getting gauge the hat seemed on the small side. Since it might be worn by a man with a larger head, I opted to make it just a wee bit larger.) I cast on 88 sts to work in Magic Loop, 44 sts on each needle.
You can memorize the pattern in no time at all, so it is a great mobile project, and it works quickly once you get the rhythm of it down.
The stitch is basically still a 2x2 rib, which makes the fabric plenty stretchable. It fits my 22.5” noggin quite comfortably, with more stretch available for a larger noggin. :-)
The next time I knit one (for myself), however, I’m thinking I may go down to 4.5mm or maybe 4mm needle, adding 8 stitches (multiples of 8 for Magic Loop). I think I’d like a tighter fabric against cold wind.
A very easy knit and I will definitely make this pattern again… might make a couple for holiday gifts this year in fact. :-)
As for the yarn… lovely. Against-the-skin soft and machine washable. Great for DH, DGD, and giftees who aren’t likely to remember to handwash stuff I make for them. It will pill cuz it’s a soft merino, but a few passes with a shaver until all the loose fibers have worked free will take care of that.
