Notes

1.14.12 - My mom admired my blue lagoon pond scarf, but wanted it to be only one strip of lace down the middle with stockinette on the sides, and fairly similar dimensions. CO 47, 3-st garter edge, 15st stockinette on either side. COWYAK provisional cast-on so that the ends match.

This yarn is beautiful to knit. I may have to go get some more in other colours for my stash…

1.14.12 (very late) - After doing a couple repeats as above, decided that I didn’t like the way it looked - stockinette around a garter-based lace pattern doesn’t really work. Changed it to be stockinette-based, removed the purl column on either side, otherwise the same. Looks much smoother now; the wrong side is still presentable, I think.

1.15.12 - The sides curled too much from the stockinette, even with the garter border. After consulting TECHknitter and experimentation with ribbing, I decided to frog and add in a zig-zag border. So far so good.

1.15.12 - Still curls, but not as badly; I am going to keep going and see if I can’t block this out. At worst, I can make another one. I don’t feel like frogging just to redo the edge (should have made the zigs taller).

1.17.12 - double-wrapped bindoff with US4 needles on both ends (had to purl on cast-on edge to get same appearance). ~36x8.5” pre-blocking. 46 repeats. 69g. Blocked to 10.5x38”, isn’t really severely blocked, will re-block if the side curls don’t stay flattish.

Blocking seems to have worked, hopefully it holds. Unhappy that I chose to learn to do a braided join on this scarf; it is visible and palpable. Should have done the knit-with-two-strands-for-a-bit join, whatever that’s called; that might still have been visible, but it would not feel ‘hard’ like the braided join does. Oh well, hopefully mom won’t notice :)

Update 2014 - Mom likes and wears this scarf. She’s the kind to be very careful with care of items, and has not reported any significant problems with the curling from stockinette (it apparently does curl some, but she doesn’t mind it, and while she doesn’t pin it out to dry after washing, but laying it out flat is apparently good enough for her)
