Notes

Trying out my new Kollage square DPNs :-)

I really like this yarn. And these DPNs seem to work pretty well. The pattern is easy to follow (though I don’t really like the S2KP, but it’s a pretty small price to pay for such a nifty pattern. Hopefully it’ll stretch out though… it looks pretty small… >.>

9/27/11 - I did about 1.5 repeats and tried to get it up over my leg. Way too small (64 stitches around). Therefore frogged and restarted at the large size (72 stitches around). I’ve almost used the yarn that I had frogged :-)

9/28/11 - I tried on the sock leg when I was about 2 repeats in… it was hard to get it over my heel, but I was able to. I’ve turned the heel now, and have found that the added length to the leg makes it even harder to get the sock on. I’m going to start from the other end of the yarn with size 3 needles and try it in both 64 and 72 stitches around to see which will work better (or I guess I could add yet another purl stitch into the pattern, making this 80 stitches around on size 2 needles?)… will think about it and work on it probably tomorrow. Sigh. I do like this pattern still though.

After swatching, it turns out that I get the same gauge using size 3 square DPNs as size 2 regular round DPNs. Making 72st-around socks on the size 3 square DPNs, hopefully this works.

12/25/11 Argh. Almost done with second sock (started it a couple days ago, finally), and it doesn’t look like I’m going to have quite enough yarn to finish it. What’s up with this? I am now going to have to decide to how to deal with this… find someone with a partial skein? buy a whole new hank? frog both socks and reknit with fewer repeats in the leg? gah. did large size - 72 st - with size 3 square DPN, which seems to give me about the same gauge as size 2 rounds do

12/26/11 - Half a repeat and the toe away from completion. Turns out sock #1 weighs 56ish grams. And it turns out, looking at the pattern, they recommend 365 yards of yarn, and this yarn is 354 yards. My math tells me that 7 grams of yarn would be about 21 yards. Sigh. If I buy a whole new hank of yarn, what will I do with the rest of it (though I love the colour, so I’ll probably figure something out)? Also, I will have to remember to check the yardage recommendations and not just weight recommendations before each project (especially the next one I do with this yarn). Sigh.

1/4/12 - Finished! Picked up another hank of the yarn a couple days ago; will probably make fingerless mitts with what’s left. All I need to do now is block and photograph (but the sock blockers are currently occupied). :)

1/6/12 - Blocked. They stretched a bunch while wet; seem to have shrunk down a bit since. Will need to photograph before taking off the sock blockers to see if they really are huge. If they are, I will be sad.

These socks are still going. I like them, but they’re a bit tight getting up over the heel (the pattern isn’t actually very stretchy) and they tend to sag a bit (they’re kind of long, and my calves are wide).
