Notes

I’ve been planning this for over a year!

Top down, raglan jumper with V-neck. Slightly bell sleeves. Some bust / waist shaping.

Crossword grid stranded knitting design for the hem.

Possibly black and white vertical stripes for the neck band too.

My rough notes

Cast on 52 sts on circular needle (30 for back of neck, 10 for each sleeve, 1 each for left and right fronts). Place markers after sts 1, 11, 41, and 51.

Knit back and forth (don’t join in the round yet).

Increase before and after each stitch marker on the (RS) knit rows (m1 loop increase).

Increase (kfb) in first and last sts in every 4th row (neckline increases), ie every second (RS) knit row.

Knit until have 284 sts (39 for each front, 62 for each shoulder, 82 for the back). Join to knit in the round. (Should be around Row 51).

Knit 1 round.

Put sleeve sts onto waste yarn; then for each sleeve, cast on 4 sts underarm, place marker, cast on 4 sts.

Knit 14 rounds even.

Bust shaping
3 rows of short rows to give shaping in the bustal region.

Knit to 6 sts before underarm marker, wrap stitch/turn work. Purl back to 6 sts before other underarm marker. Wrap/turn.

Knit 2 rounds.

Knit to 12 sts before marker, wrap/turn, purl to 12 sts before other marker, wrap/turn.

Knit 2 rounds

Knit to 18 sts before marker, wrap/turn, purl to 18 sts before other marker, wrap/turn.

When knitting the straight rounds, pick up the wrap along with the wrapped stitch, and knit them together.

Waist Shaping
From Row 31 from when join in round / underarm stitches added.

Dec 4 sts each round, every 7 rounds, 5 times @ each side seam (ssk, k1, slip marker, k1, k2tog).

Then increase by 4 sts each row, at the side seams, until have 180 sts.

Knit to 10 cm less than desired length.

Cut red yarn, join black. Knit 1 row. Join white.

Knit crossword grid pattern (1 black, 3 white sts per ‘grid’ box).

Knit 2 rows black.
Purl 1 row.
Change to smaller needles (3.5 mm) and knit until have enough length to fold back to the start of the stranded knitting section. Bind off loosely.

Fold up hem at the row of purling. Stitch the hem in place on the wrong side of the body (to the first row of black on the front).

Body used 290 g red yarn.

Sleeves

Put stitches back on needle (4.0 mm), join on red yarn. Pick up 5 sts underarm, place marker (start of row), pick up 5 more sts. 72 total.

Work 6 rows.

Row 7 - Decreases in pattern : k1, k2tog, knit to last 3 sts of row, ssk, k1.

Decrease in same manner in 7th row 3 more times. Knit to wrist length, then knit 2x2 ribbing for the cuffs. Bind off.

I found the sleeves were a bit too short, and the crossword grid cuffs were getting very grubby. I removed them, and knit double-length ribbed cuffs. They are much more comfortable, I can have them over my knuckles when working in a cold office, and fold them back when working in the kitchen, etc.

Frogged to use the yarn for another project. I just wasn’t wearing it practically ever.
