Notes

4/3/2014 - Really thought I’d have these done a bit sooner, but ran into a lot of unrelated delays. Very happy with the finished product. Not sure I love the “knit an uninterrupted tube, then snip the yarn to add in the afterthought heel” method, but that could just be because it was my first time doing it, it was fingering weight yarn (might be easier with thicker yarn?), it was DARK yarn, and I could’ve been doing it with better lighting. I’ll have to try it again to see how I really feel about it.

I was a little worried that the Verdant Gryphon Eidos felt a little “coarse” or…not sure how to describe it. Not a problem! It feels nice and squishy while wearing these!!

3/25/2014 - Right off the heels (ha ha) of the Dream in Color / Malabrigo socks, I wanted to try another pair also in fingering weight, but with fewer stitches around to see if I could get a more snug fit. This was also good opportunity to try out the new Verdant Gryphon yarns I’d just gotten, specifically Eidos for this project.

  • CO 30 (same as the previous pair)
  • US 1 1/2 (same size as previous pair)
  • Increased every other round until 56 stitches (that’s 8 less than the previous pair)

Rather than do the 3x1 ribbing all the way up the front of the foot / calf like I did on the previous pair, I tried 3x2 ribbing in just a couple areas - right about where the toes meet the foot for maybe 2”, went back to stockinette stitch, and then another round of the 3x2 ribbing up the front bend of the foot (front of the ankle I guess?) for maybe 3-4”? Need to take row counts in these areas to duplicate with the second sock.

Unfortunately the Verdant Gryphon Shango colorway is going to have me looking like a Cleveland Browns fan. The skein I got has a bit more higher contrast in oranges and browns than what was implied on the site. That’s fine - it looks nice, but living in NE Ohio, folks will assume it’s a sports thing (it’s not!).

This time I’m deciding to just keep knitting the tube all the way up the calf with no waste yarn for the afterthought heel. Instead I’m going to try the method of just snipping into the yarn where I want to introduce the heel ( http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bC8WcAmmnv0 )
