TL;DR use chart. Only refer to written to determine when to crochet into chain space vs chain. Written has numerous errors including stitch counts.

Over all I do not recommend this pattern to novices or those who rely on written instructions. It won’t work and cause a lot of heart ache and ripping out.

I… I think I’m ready to consider myself proficient in crochet. On line 20.

May 13, 2017

Frak this pattern up the Wahoo.

Seriously. The written instructions DO NOT line up with the pattern as charted. Which to follow? Stitch counts are only given rarely. So frustrating! Line 21 in particular drove ME BATTY.

Finally figured out to follow the charted pattern for that line exclusively. The written says to ignore all TREBLE stitches, but that won’t get you a good stitch count on line 23. Do you know how much it sucks to rip out nearly 100 FPDC? SO SO MUCH.

I try to be kind, I do, however, I don’t have unlimited free time. I could be on line 30 something if the person who wrote this pattern had actually had someone proof read it, or test crochet it, or, well, been at all vaguely professional about posting it.

Putting up a huge project like this, never responding to comments about things like line 21, it’s so frustrating.

Nope. thought I had the math on line 21 figured out. Did not. Could not get line 23 to work without line 21 working.

You need 92 stitches, counting the turn chain as a stitch, and the middle. I get 95 following the chart. I get 93 following the written.

I thought -- she’s not counting the turning chain, right? But then you’re count would be uneven on either side.

you end up with 6 (3 middle plus 3 outside repeat of 84 (7+5). 84+6=90. Even if you were just picking up the regular 3 at the beginning, that’s 1 too many.

You’re add 6 stitches on the next row. So where, supposedly did I find an extra stitch???

You know, I’ve looked at other’s notes, and the stitch count is off later off. I’ve just realized I’ve spent probably an HOUR of my life trying to compensate for a bad pattern.

Let’s go actually craft something instead with a better pattern.

OKAY so I don’t know how to quit things.

While frogging I compared line by line to the chart, ignoring written instructions.

There it was. line 19. An extra chain 3 to to pattern that caused the above lines to have extra stitches, somehow.

This is what happens when you don’t give stitch counts more often!

So now I have my add 3 at the middle, plus 84, add 5 at the end, gives you 92. WHEE.

-.-

Wow. Counted line 16. Guess what? There’s 69. NOT 68. 69.

I… I’m done. seriously. I could have been half finished on another project.

May 21, 2017

WHY must I go after this again. Maybe because 200+ got it done.

Shawl via chart only, ripped back to 18, went forward, and behold, following chart only I got past line 24.

Into section four. Brief peek at written to confirm if knit into chain or into chain-gap for section 3 design.

May 24, 2017

Made it near end of section four. Looking to add new yarn soon. May just work outside of ball two for more pink. Had to fudge line 33. One stitch off. Made chain just outside at middle one instead of 2.

May 25, 2017

Made it to middle of the DCFP line of section four before the yarn ran out on ball one. Going to connect to pink edge and work from outside in to finish section five. Should get a thin band of orange and maybe a touch of yellow on edging? We’ll see.

May 29, 2017

It is ugly. I know someone, somewhere likes this yarn. I’ve grown to really dislike the pink in it.

So so much.

Going to get some Wilton and White Vinegar and over dye this whole finished object and see what happens.

Great advice on overdying yarn: http://www.dyeyouryarn.com/pink-yarn.html

Did a row of SC after the DCFP of section 5. Calling this done. Overdyed in Sky Blue Wilton rom Michaels. Waiting to dry. I know my pin up for blocking is a little off. May buy the bendy wires and reblock later.
