Notes

Gauge in previous project yarn was 4.5 inch on 8s. Assuming same here. Dropped 3 sizes for ribbing.

Traveling loop on 40s to crown magic loop, where I often add cord length if it gets awkward. Chiagoo Red Lace Tips.

Did techknitting 3 in 1 cast on trick to prevent jog in join, so cast on first stitch simple reverse loop, cast on 102 Old Norwegian (thus the reverse loop), slip first stitch at join, purl the whole row, p2tog the last stitch and first slipped stitch, slip the next, place marker for new row, carry tail for 4 stitches (usually 3 but I think I want the tail on the purl bump side, not the knit side. Maybe? I may be fishing it out if I am wrong.)

Ribbing is pretty close to 5.5 per inch as pattern; if a little under I am okay with a snug hat.

9/4/2014 made it to row 6 of ribbing. Debated doing a tubular cast on and joining but decided to give the pattern method a try. Not exactly the blue I wanted, but I was indecisive about the blues available. Not a bad pick, but maybe a little softer blue would have been better?

Finished casing/band. Swore I had stitch count but first line of color work off by one. Snuck in a make one, because, no, not redoing the casing connection, darn it. White carried left hand / under so I don’t have to purl continental. Really should be reversed but I can barely do a knit continental as it is.

9/6/2014
Had to undo back to lifeline at casing. Blue needs to be dominant, darn it. Otherwise the window pane stitches are anemic. Learned the Norwegan purl for Continental. Attempted techknitting overcast method for tail of white.

Knit stitch after purl in Continental very loose/large. But is universally so, so ok, can live with for this project. May re knit this at some point. Slightly tight floats, hoping won’t be evident in slouching style. Portuguese purled the purl all row.

Yup, on additional consideration, will re knit in a dif blue and be more cautious in the floats, but will try and block out this one with cardboard or plastic.

Edit:who am I kidding? I am on a yarn no buy until Christmas. Ripped back to casing. Picked up the extra stitch again. Steamed used yarn, setup into hanks.
Techknitting has a method to avoid the large knit stitch during the two purls involving slipping purl wise yarn in front the first and working it the next row up. Floats can be made looser by focusing on them a bit more and less on speed.

9/9/2014
A few too loose floats to contend with. Wove in all ends overcast style, cause that’s how we roll. Decided only way to carry the white is to twist yarn once, not catch. This prevents white from bleeding through in a column on the catch. Otherwise 1.75 inch float or so which is a bit long to float 8 stitches. Doing the purl trick as previously mentioned.

10/5/2015 Done with letters colorwork. On row 18. Accidently ordered size 6 DPN so stuck doing magic loop to finish the hat. Weird on line 17 knitting into the purl stitch but it’s done.

10/6/2014 finished! Will wash and block a bit. Did overcast weave in as you go for the white ends at top of hat. Skimmed tails up away from brim and snipped. Weighed yarn.
