I followed Ozbambi’s advice as follows:

As recommended by many other knitters, to achieve a stretchy edge, I’m doing a YO between the first two sts:
Row 1: K1, YO, K1, M1L, K, M1L, K until 3 sts remain, M1R, K1, M1R, K1, drop YO (from previous row) (there isn’t one to drop on the first repeat), K1
Rows 2, 3, & 4: K1, YO, K1, M1L, K until 3 sts remain, M1R, K1, drop YO from previous row, K1
Repeat rows 1-4……..(as per pattern)*
