12/6/2012 - My mom found this yarn for me (Thanks mom!) and I decided a classic watchman style cap would be perfect. I cast on last night after a REALLY long day and just sat in bed and ribbed ribbed ribbed until all the days stress got off me.
- Size 7 16” HiyaHiya needles make this yarn glide and so far not squeak.
- Cast on 96 stitches as pattern calls for.
- I pulled the yarn out until I was at the end of the first color. Made a slip not at the color change and then did a Long Tail Cast on. Not sure if this was good or bad. I like that there is just one round of gold on the edge of the hat - but because half of the cast on is in Green it kind of has that “Wrong Side” look on the very edge of the hat. I think I would do it differently if I were to do it again - but it’s fine. I think I will know better when the whole hat is knit if this was a mistake.
- Hat looks tiny - like a cuff. I know ribbing stretches but….
Will work on this at nights when I am sick of school and can’t do anything more complex or exciting. Ribbing is good meditation. Like worry beads.
Got my first inch done on my first night.
12/16/2012 - Progress is being made! I got an inch done at the hair salon, another inch here and there at night while winding down to go to sleep…. And suddenly I have 38 rows done and the hat is 6.5 inches long now. Another three inches of ribbing and then on to the decrease section. Ay, caramba! I may get this done for Christmas yet! (knocking on wood…..)
12.21.2012 - Had a minor set back when I realized my ribbing was off on the hat. I watched THIS video on how to Tink my knitting. I have been unknitting and unpurling incorrectly for years - which resulted in twisted stitches. That is why I tend to rip out my projects rather than tinking back. It kills me that I waited so long to learn how to do this. All the projects I ripped out… Uffda! Anyway, I got to my 9.5 inch length and now I am in decreaseville. WOOT!
12/22/2012 - Finished last night.
- Knit 55 rows in ribbing before I began my decrease section.
- Finished hat unstetched and unblocked measures 11 inches long and around 6.5 inches diameter.
I tried it on and it fits very nicely. Love the length of the brim and I think it will be really warm. I have no doubt this hat would fit pretty much anyone who tried it on. That wonderful k2,p2 rib really allows this to be a one size fits all.
