Notes

I made up one gaiter using #10 knitting cotton as stated in the pattern and size 0 needles as directed on the Vintage Stitch-o-Rama blog where I found the pattern. It ended up way too small. It only just fits around my leg and is too short. It certainly doesn’t lay over my shoe the way the picture from the pattern shows. Nor does it come all the way over my calf, again as the picture shows. The gussets are definitely behind the instep. In short, it’s too small, and I’m a fairly small person. I’m trying again with two extra pattern repeats in circumference and four extra pattern repeats in length plus an extra inch in the ribbed section.

There are a couple of errors in the pattern. After the first cable section, the pattern calls for repeating the cable five more times then increasing for another repeat, and then decreasing for a final repeat. This would make a funny little point a little way above the ankle. I believe the pattern meant to call for doing the first cable section then increasing on the second then doing five more at the wider width then finally decreasing on the last. This allows extra room for the calf. There’s also a missing stitch in the repeating section in line 25. The repeating section in the row has nine stitches, but the pattern only gives eight of them. You just have to purl one more stitch than it states in each section to have it come out right.

The picture with one gaiter with a red ribbon strap at the instep is the original size. The picture with two gaiters with a brown leather strap at the instep is my final version.
