Woot woot! This is the very first project for the new SGY Superwash Chunky!
This cowl is such a quick and satisfying knit. Although, I have no idea how the designer and even some people have managed to knit this within the 100 yard range. To me the gauge seems bunk. I didn’t do a gauge swatch per se, I knew that I was getting 3 sts to the inch with this yarn using a 6.5mm (US 10.5) needle. In order to get the 4 sts/inch I would have to go down to at least a 5.5mm and to me the fabric would feel too stiff and thick with no drape. So I went with a 6mm.
Cast on pretty loose, had knit the short rows but must have either messed up somewhere along the line cause the first attempt I couldn’t get the 3 sts between the wraps. I had measured the cowl and it was way past the 11” mark so I ripped back a bit and made it so there was 5 sts between wraps. The point went past my bust line, so I could have ripped back even further.
I had knit the decreases, ripped back when I realized that I was going to run out of yarn. So I had knit 2 rounds between the first and second decreases, and then 1 round between the rest. The cowl was already well past the 11” mark so I didn’t knit any additional rounds, just went straight to the garter border…I could only do 2 ridges before binding off, as I was dangerously close to running out of yarn. I had to do the bind off three times (3 different methods, kept running out of yarn each time), that’s when I ripped out the last round. Did a Russian Bind Off, which is nice and stretchy. I seriously have about 20” of yarn left over!!
I LOVE how this turned out! I LOVE this yarn, it’s so squishy soft…and warm! I’ve been wearing it since the second I finished weaving in the ends!
I’ll definitely be knitting more of these!
Future reference:
- can definitely do less short rows
- add more to the length of the back neck for more scrunchy-ness in the drape
- can decrease 4-6 more stitches for a closer fit around the neck.
After wearing this pretty much every day since binding off, I find I definitely need more length in the back neck for warmth.
The first 2 photos shows the yarn as a really bright purple…the last 2 photos are more true to the actual colour…at least on my computer!
