Since I had a bit of extra yardage, I thought that I could make the shawl a little bigger. I ended up having some issues, but with a bit of fudging everything worked out nicely! :)

I went up to size 5 needles, because I like a looser, more drapey gauge with fingering weight garter stitch. I knitted the garter stitch section until I reached 265 stitches before beginning the lace. Then I realized I wasn’t going to have enough yarn to finish out the lace repeats, so I only did eight (and ended with 356 st.). For the 8th repeat, I moved the markers as stated for the 10th one. For the third row of that repeat, here’s what I did after the first marker: K4, K2tog 3 times, then start the lace pattern. Continue until 2 stitches before the next marker, then K2tog (might have had to K2tog twice…I can’t remember and my notes are vague!). Then I repeated that on the opposite side of the center stitches.

I didn’t have enough yarn left to bind off with. I thought I was going to have to rip out my last lace repeat, but then I remembered that I had some KnitPicks Stroll Tonal in the gypsy colorway left over from a pair of socks. The darker shade in that yarn matches the color of this yarn perfectly. I decided to try binding off with that yarn instead of frogging back my work, and I’m actually really happy with how it looks! The bound off edge blends in with the shawl at some points, but at some points it’s a lighter red…sort of an ombre effect. Anyway, I like it.
