Notes

This is an adorable little bag. I wasn’t quite happy with the pattern’s original top, so I fashioned my own using a standard fpdc (front post double crochet) diamond pattern. It made it much more acorn like. Then I added a few buttons and sewed in a lining as a finishing touch.

I found that the original pattern came out a bit floppy, so I made some modifications. For the bottom, I changed to a stiffer cotton yarn where I crocheted over a center strand to help it stand up better. Then I also cut out a ring of craft foam and sewed the lining to it before I sewed it all to the inside of the acorn. For the top, the FPDC pattern below makes a nice thick fabric.

Alternate Top Pattern:
R1: In a magic ring, ch 2, 8 dc in ring. Join with sls to first dc. (8 st)
R2: ch 2, fpdc around first dc, dc then fpdc in every dc around. Join with sls. (16 st)
(A FPDC is just a double crochet that goes around the post of the stitch of the previous row, rather than in the top. See Figs. A & B)
R3: ch 2, fpdc around ch from prev row, dc then fpdc in every st around. Join with sls. (32 st)
R4: ch 2, fpdc cluster (Fig. C) (start fpdc in fpdc to the right (Fig. D), but before finishing fpdc (2 loops on hook (Fig. E)) yo and fpdc into the fpdc to the left (creates a /\ )(Fig. F)), dc into stitch behind cluster (Fig. G), dc into next stitch. Repeat fpdc cluster and 2dc around (Fig. H). Join with sls. (48 st)
R5: ch 2, dc in next 3 st, fpdc cluster, dc in st behind cluster, dc in top of fpdc, sk next st, dc in next st, fpdc cluster. Repeat 3 dc and cluster around. Join with sls. (64 st)
R?: Repeat fpdc cluster pattern around, filling in with dc (increase by one dc per row) until the top is the diameter needed (at some point, depending on how tight you crochet, you will have to switch to a front post treble crochet to create larger diamonds).

To create rim:
R?: Repeat fpdc cluster pattern around, filling in with dc but decrease by one dc.
R?: Repeat fpdc cluster pattern around, filling in with dc but decrease by one dc.

If more length is needed:
R?: Repeat fpdc cluster pattern around, filling in with dc, but keep same number of dc as previous round.

If there are any questions, feel free to message me and I can try to answer or clarify any problems you have. Also, if you are confused about the fpdc cluster you can look at this hat pattern which gives good detailed instructions for it Diamond Ridges
