The Camel colored toes and heels are from yarn leftover from the Moorish Stripe Socks I made in 2015.
This is my standard 72 stitch circumference pattern off the top of my head.
It starts with 18 stitches using Judy’s Magi Cast-on and a set of size 1 circular needles, then increasing every other row one stitch in from the edge (4 total) using Cat Bordhi’s La-Link and La-Rink increases until there are a total of 72 stitches (36 stitches on each needle). Then I switched to the Zauberball yarn and swtiched to DPNs (just cause I like them - it’s not necessary), doing ribbing on the top of the foot and stockinette across the bottom of the foot.
Since it’s an even number of stitches, I like to start the ribbing side with one knit stitch, then P2,K2,P2,K2……P2 across and end with one more knit stitch. This centers the ribbing on the needle and the sock.
When the sock reaches the point where the top of the foot slopes up in the ankle, I use a scrap of the toe/heel color across the underside as a placemarker for where the afterthought heel will go (see half-knit sock photo).
Then I continue as a before for two rounds, then switch to all 2x2 ribbing all the way around for as long as I want, then I used Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy bindoff to finish.
Then I go back to the placemarker scrap, pick up stitches on a needle above and below, pick out the scrap, and then do the mirror opposite of the heels -- that is, I decrease one stitch in from the edges rather than increasing as I did for the toes. I usually take a peek at my friend Janelle’s excellent instructions on afterthought heels. When I’m down to 18 stitches, I kitchener those together. The number 18 is kind of arbitrary -- if you have narrower heels, you might want fewer.
