First, attach the head to the body.

For the tail, sew two 2" hexagons together as shown, then start at one end to sew the sides together.

When you get to the seam between the two hexagons, bend them a little and continue sewing. This will also help the tail to keep an even width.

Embroider the face before you put on the hat. Remember to slightly stuff the hat.

For the ears, fold a hexagon in half as shown and sew along the edges.

"Securing" a thread means you sew through the weaving and the middle of the thread itself. This will keep the thread in place.

Meet Cat Gnome, our gnome of the month October, and her mice friends (to be eaten, soon).

Special mention: The one-hexagon-mouse-with-ears pattern is not only fast but also scale-able and will make great pet toys (fill with cat nip). Make a “real size” mouse using the original TURTLE Loom™, or a rat with the TexaTURTLE™.

GNOME
Weave

  • (1) 6” black hexagon for the body
  • (1) 6” green hexagon for the hat
  • (1) 4” black hexagon for the head
  • (6) 2” black hexagons for the feet, ears, and tail

Assembly

  • To form the body, weave a piece of yarn all around the body hexagon and pull it close a little bit. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 1.5” and secure.
  • To form the head, weave a yarn end all around the head hexagon and pull it in. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 1.5” and secure.
  • Sew head to body.
  • For the tail, follow the pictures to sew two TinyTURTLE hexagons together. Shape the bending tail by sewing some of the sides together when you get to the join of the two hexagons.
  • Sew tail to body.
  • For each foot, weave a yarn end all around a foot hexagon and pull it in. Stuff. Pull tight to close the opening.
  • Sew feet to body.
  • Use photo for guidance: Embroider a few claws in orange onto the feet. Embroider diamond shaped eyes in yellow onto the face. Pull a double strand of orange through the head for the whiskers, clip to desired length.
  • For the hat, fold the hat hexagon in half as shown. Pull in the top fold to form a tip, then sew along the length of one hexagon side to form the hat. Very lightly stuff the hat, then position it onto the gnome’s head and body as pictured and secure with a few stitches (start in the back of the head for even distribution).

- (1) 2” neon hexagon for the body

Assembly

  • Secure the start tail as shown in the picture. This will be the tail. Clip to desired length and (optionally) make a knot at the end to prevent fraying.
  • Fold the hexagon in half as shown and sew along as shown on the photo.
  • (it doesn’t matter which direction you sew, just make sure that the thread is secured at A and B so that you can pull the thread in between those two points to shape the ears).Secure the thread at A, sew to B, pull in a little bit to form the ears, then secure once more.
  • Before closing completely, stuff slightly.
  • Using some cotton thread (for example Lion Brand Bonbons) embroider two French Knots as eyes.

I’m adding my gray mouse in Lang Yarns’ new WoolAddicts AIR to this project … it’s becoming very popular due to the authentic feel, look, and size.

The gray mouse was woven on the original TURTLE Loom.
