Notes

Let’s conclude our “Gnome of the Month“ series this November with thanks and some Pilgrim Gnomes.

Other Materials

  • DMC Metallic embroidery floss in gold
  • Stuffing
  • Tapestry needle, scissors

MRS. PILGRIM GNOME
Weave

  • (1) 6” blue hexagon for the body
  • (1) 6” white hexagon for the hat
  • (1) 4” beige hexagon for the head
  • (1) 2” beige hexagon for the nose
  • (2) 2” brown hexagons for the feet
  • (1) 2” fuzzy hexagon for the beard

Assembly

  • To form the body, weave a piece of yarn all around the body hexagon and pull it close a little bit. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 1.5” and secure.
  • To form the head, weave a yarn end all around the head hexagon and pull it in. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 1.5” and secure.
  • Sew head to body.
  • To form the nose, weave a yarn end all around the nose hexagon and pull it. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 0.5” and secure.
  • Sew nose onto the head.
  • For the hat, fold the hat hexagon in half as shown. Pull in the top fold to form a tip, then sew along the length of one hexagon side to form the hat. Very lightly stuff the hat, then position it onto the gnome’s head and body as pictured and secure with a few stitches (start in the back of the head for even distribution).
  • For each foot, weave a yarn end all around a foot hexagon and pull it in. Stuff. Pull tight to close the opening. Sew feet to body.

  • (1) 6” black hexagon for the hat

  • (2) 2” black hexagons for the feet
  • (1) 2” fuzzy white hexagon for the beard

Hat Band
We used the assistance of the TexaTURTLE loom to freestyle weave the hat band. The loom is not designed for this, but it works. Use any alternative method you wish to making the hat band. You can also cut a 7” x .5” piece of felt instead.

  • Start weaving as usual until you have four “warp” strands.
  • Wrap the yarn around the hexagon 4 times (this will be your weft), clip yarn.
  • With a tapestry needle, start weaving back and forth, using medium tension (the width should be about 1/2 inch).

  • Sew the ends of the hat band together, this seam goes in the back. Wrap and tie some metallic embroidery floss around the front of the hat band to indicate a buckle (see photos). Slide the hat band over the hat and move into position.

PUMPKIN
This is my favorite pumpkin so far. Please note that it will scale if you make it on the larger hexagon looms. And a mix of different sizes, maybe in different colors, will make a nice table display.

If you are looking for a quicker pumpkin project, you can also weave any two hexagons, sew them together into a hexi-puff, then follow the sewing instructions below to shape the pumpkin. The stem can be a piece of natural stick, or felt. The leaves can be made of felt.

Weave

  • (3) 2” orange hexagons for the pumpkin
  • (1) 1” brown hexagon for the stem
  • (2) 1” green hexagons for the leaves

Assembly

  • For the pumpkin, put the three orange hexagons next to each other as shown in the photos, sew those sides.
  • Connect the top sides as shown to form the top of the pumpkin.
  • Repeat the same for the bottom sides.
  • Sew along the remaining side of the pumpkin. Stuff before closing completely.
  • With a long end of yarn, sew through the center, leaving a short tail.
  • Wrap the yarn around the side of the pumpkin and sew threw the center like before. Pull the yarn a little bit to “shape” the first section of the pumpkin.
  • Repeat the last step four more times, evenly around the pumpkin.
  • Knot the end tail to the start tail and sew in the extra ends. Clip any excess yarn.
  • For the stem, roll up the hexagon and secure with a few stitches. Attach to pumpkin.
  • For the leaves, weave in one end, use the other end to attach the leaves to the pumpkin.

BONUS PROJECT: BRACELET
Note that you can use the same method used for the Hat Band to make a friendship bracelet. The width is fine for a small bracelet, but you can make it wider if you wish by just adding a few more rounds of bias weaving before you start weaving back and forth.

  • Use the starting tail to sew on a pretty button.
  • Use the end tail to make a button hole: Make a loop at the end of the bracelet that is large enough to fit the button. Stitch Button Hole stitches along that loop. Sew in ends.
