This is our Gnome of the Month for March, lovingly named “The Little Irishman” by Kim B. He’s the fancy one, with a plaid suit and a hat band that’s woven into the hat. And of course there’s the “pot of gold”!

Other Materials

• (optional) Mylar Craft Trim, 10230 Gold Frizette, Design Works Crafts Inc.
• Stuffing
• Tapestry needle, scissors

Weave

• (1) 6” plaid green hexagon for the body
• (1) 6” green with black band hexagon for the hat
• (1) 4” beige hexagon for the head
• (1) 2” beige hexagon for the nose
• (2) 2” black hexagons for the feet

Also:

• (3) 2” black hexagons for the cauldron
• (7) 1” gold or yellow hexagons for the coins

Body Plaid Pattern
Start weaving a 6” hexagon with a loop around the white nails. Weave one round (you now have four strands of “warp” yarn. Switch to light green. Weave 4 rounds. Switch back to green, weave 4 rounds. Repeat until all nails are filled as usual. Don’t worry if the side where you change colors is not perfect … it will all hide in the seam. Clip threads. Measure 4 wraps for each color for weaving the center part of the hexagon. Weave so that the 4 rows light, 4 rows green continues. You will need to weave one nail twice to make it fit evenly.

Hat with Band Pattern
Start weaving a 6” hexagon as usual, using the green yarn. Weave 12 rounds, then switch to black. Weave 3 rounds, then switch back to green and finish the hexagon.

Assembly

• To form the body, weave a piece of yarn all around the body hexagon and pull it close a little bit. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 1.5” and secure.
• To form the head, weave a yarn end all around the head hexagon and pull it in. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 1.5” and secure.
• Sew head to body.
• To form the nose, weave a yarn end all around the nose hexagon and pull it. Stuff. Pull tight the opening to about 0.5” and secure.
• Sew nose onto the head.
• For each foot, weave a yarn end all around a foot hexagon and pull it in. Stuff. Pull tight to close the opening. Sew feet to body.
• For the hat, fold the hat hexagon in half as shown in the picture. Pull in the top fold to form a tip, then sew along the length of one hexagon side to form the hat. Very lightly stuff the hat, then position it onto the gnome’s head and body as pictured and secure with a few stitches.
• For the beard, sew one side of the beard hexagon right under the nose.
• For the cauldron, sew three black hexagons together as shown, then sew the sides indicated with blue arrows (these sides will be the bottom of the cauldron). Sew the last side seam. Bend the tips at the top of the cauldron over to the outside and secure the tip to the cauldron wall.
• For the gold coins, weave about 7 hexagons using the Mylar craft trim or any yellow yarn. Weave in the ends around the perimeter. Clip ends.
