Notes

Long road trip = time to work on a cardigan while keeping Dan company. His dad died and we had to drive 18 hours each way to get to the funeral. To keep myself awake and my hands busy, I decided to cast on this project and get as far as I could during the trip.

By the time we returned home (after at least 36 hours of driving in a 72-hour period) I’d finished the body from the bottom hem up to the arm join, one full sleeve, and cast on for the second sleeve. I’d have gotten further if I hadn’t had an allergic reaction to something I ate at IKEA in Tempe, which resulted in having to take a benadryl and falling asleep for a while. I also drove for the last four hours home on Sunday night so that Dan could get some rest, since he couldn’t take Monday off.

Really loving the color combinations in this project, and I love the fabric that this yarn makes! It’s got a lot of VM in it, but I kind of like encountering and removing each bit, because it reminds me that this yarn came from real sheep in real fields, hopefully enjoying the sun and air and grazing. I didn’t know Dan’s father well at all, but meditating on this aspect of the yarn made me feel like I was appreciating the simple joys of life, which is something his Dad would hopefully approve of.

I am almost done with the yoke decreases; I’d be done with them already if I’d read the pattern more closely and realized that there’s two big decrease rows in there that I’d missed. Ah well, ripped back and am moving forward again. Should start the shawl collar soon!

Halfway done with the shawl collar short rows. Hoped to finish tonight, but should be done tomorrow if not. Then it’s just grafting the underarm stitches and weaving in ends.

And…finished! The shawl collar took a bit over a full ball to complete. I did an Icelandic bind off, and it looks great! Kitchenered the underarms, and now to block and weave in ends. I haven’t decided yet on buttons, if any. I might spring for something fancy from JUL Designs, or just leave it as-is. I’m thinking about adding pockets, but haven’t decided yet…

I did the collar on size 9 needles because I didn’t have an 8 with a long-enough cord to accommodate the number of stitches. I think it looks good, though!
