Notes

Using stash yarn bought c20 years ago for machine knitting, a chenille (hence Caterpillar) and a plain burgundy acrylic. Working with 2 ends together in both cases, using 2.75mm for the chenille band and then 3.25mm for the chenille stripes and 3.5mm needles for the plain yarn stripes.

7/1/15 - Cable cast on using 3.75mm SPNs to prevent tightness and threaded a fine nylon cord through the cast on loops as a lifeline to assist with picking up stitches for the hem later on. Then switched to 2.75mm DPNs. After turning up the hem there was an uncomfortable ridge on the inside from the cast-on edge.

22/1/15 - Pulled it out and started again with a provisional cast-on to eliminate the ridge at the top of the hem. Much better. Had to work 15 K rounds before the P round to give a 1.5” hem as per the pattern, since row tension is tighter with my yarn.

Slipping 1st stitch of 2nd round in each new colour to minimise the step. Working 7 P rounds in chenille, change yarn, 5 K rounds in plain yarn, K another round in chenille, repeat.

Rounded the top by decreasing 10 sts evenly in 1st chenille round (K) after both 5th and 6th plain (K) stripes and then 9 sts after the 7th plain stripe to reduce from 110 to 81 sts. Did the next chenille (P) stripe then changed to plain yarn and finished similarly to yellowrose741’s Wurm as follows:

1: (K7, K2tog) to end. (72 sts)
2: K
3: (K6, K2tog) to end. (63 sts)
4: K
5: (K5, K2tog) to end. (54 sts). Change yarn.
6: K
7: (P4, P2tog) to end. (45 sts)
8: P
9: (P3, P2tog) to end. (36 sts)
10: P
11: (P2, P2tog) to end. (27 sts)
12: P
13: (P1, P2tog) to end. (18 sts)
14: P
15: P2tog to end. (9 sts)
16: P
17: (P1, P2tog) 3 times. (6 sts)
Cut yarn, take it through the remaining sts and pull up.

If I made another one, I’d stagger the decreases in rows 1-17 above to make the last K stripe and the central disc circular rather than polygonal.

Total weight: 113g.
