Notes

Several people have asked me where to get this pattern as it’s out of print. I got it from a very kind knitter who has reworked it and clarified it. She’s asked me to direct others to her instead of redistributing her work. If you send me a PM, I will give you her contact info. The original pattern is in the public domain at this point.

12/16/16 All three are done and delivered! The last two pics are of the prototype, not the ones I made.

12/14/16 Finished up all the details on this one: I added the name in cross stitch, sewed up the last seam, wove in ends, added a jingle bell to the toe, crocheted an edge around the top and added a hanging loop. The edge is a single crochet (as far as I can tell) and I used a 4.5mm hook hanging around at my LYS. The loop for the bell is a simple crochet chain. I made the hanging loop by casting on 24 sts and then binding them off. All these details were to match the prototype stocking.

I’m very happy with how it turned out!

10/15/16 Current yardage total is something of an estimate, although it should be reasonably close. It does not include the yarn I will need for the name and final seam.

10/14/16 Wove in all the ends!! At least, all the ones I had so far. I added the face via duplicate stitch and will hopefully sew the foot side seams tonight. I’m going to wait to sew the main seam until I get home (away for the weekend) because I don’t remember what the names are supposed to be. I want to embroider on the name before sewing up the last seam. Also, the prototype I have has a crocheted edge with a hanging loop around the top, so I’ll figure out how to do that.

A couple of things I did differently:
-For the face, I moved Santa’s left eye in one stitch so his mouth and nose would be centered.
-I added a couple of rows toward the top to match the prototype. It made Santa’s hat a little taller.
-I added one extra decrease round to the toe.
-Mine is just a touch smaller than the original stocking--my gauge is closer to pattern gauge. I figure I’ll do a damp blocking to relax it a bit, and it will also stretch over time when it’s loaded up with awesome Xmas goodies. I doubt it will be a problem. That said, I might add a couple of extra plain green rows to the next two just to give them a smidge more length.

10/12/16 Decided to knit the foot longer to match the prototype I have. I extended it from 6.5” to about 8.25” before starting decreases. I’m working the foot and toe on magic loop instead of dpns.

10/11/16 Coming along nicely. I didn’t read ahead well enough and mistakenly bound off the heel sts on each side of the center panel instead of placing them on a holder, but I just picked up and knit sts along the bound off edge. Easy, completely invisible. I’m about to start the toe decreases.

10/8/16 Finally got all the yarn I need for this and got going again a couple of days ago. I think it’s working up pretty well! I’m holding the angora yarn double.

9/9/16 This is the first of three stockings I’m making from this pattern for a friend of a friend. I have one made from the same pattern that’s about 35 years old as a prototype. I will dig through my stash to find some pink and some gold to use. I’m working on tracking down some alpaca for Santa’s beard.

Used longtail cast on.

Initial skein weights: green 104 gm, red 103 gm, angora 9 gm
Didn’t weigh: pink (guessing 103), white (guessing 103), 2nd ball of angora (guessing 10), black (guessing 104)

Needles: US6 Addi Clicks, medium cable
US6 Addi Rockets, 40” cable
4.5mm crochet hook
