Beginning to check gauge for cartridge rib in size 5 needles

Will use size 4 needles for stockinette in order to get gauge

04-07-2017

Switched to larger needles. Beginning stockinette back. Now this is moving SO much faster!

Have to do some fudging with my math, but no turning back now, I’ve knit a total of 3 fronts (as I had to rip out an entire front)

26 stitches = 4 inches in st st

34 rows in cartridge rib = 4 rows

adding 1 1/4’’ to bilateral fronts to account for a wider back (different gauge in st st)
I don’t want to have “ruffling” when I seam the fronts to the back, perpendicularly.

Next step, blocking.

A note about seaming:

I knew my st st gauge was far off from the pattern (22 stitches per 4”) and so I was concerned about bunching on the back of the cardigan, which I did NOT want. To compensate for my larger gauge, I knit an additional 1.25” to each textured side panel.

Ideally, you want the upper back (between the two markers you’ve placed) to be the same width as you finished and bound off st st back panel. Knitting extra length to my sides made this so.

Then, I followed this tutorial from Kelbourne Woolens to calculate my ratio for pickup (again, to help avoid bunching). My ratio was roughly a 3:4.

The tutorial is also helpful is showing you stitch anatomy and where to pick up the edges of stitches to make a nice perpendicular seam. I highly recommend it.

Finally doing the armhole treatment because I want to wear this sweater.

  • Picked up approximately 74 stitches on each arm with size 2 dpn.
  • Knit one row, twisting the stitches to close gaps
  • Switched to size 3 needles & knit 9 rows before loosely BO knitwise.

It’s (finally, finally) done and I love it SO much.
