My sister received this cute little blue hat as a baby gift when munchkin #1 was born. But the hat didn’t have flaps to cover the ears, and it didn’t have cords to tie the hat and make sure it fit properly over the head.
Per my sister’s request I improvised a pair of earflaps. I picked up 26 stitches for each flap, knit a round, and then used paired decreases to shape the flap. Once I had three stitches left, I transitioned into and an I-cord, and voila! A baby hat with flaps and I-cord ties was done.
The Patons Grace was slightly lighter than the yarn of the hat, so I dyed the hat to make the transition less obvious (the last picture shows the hat pre-dying). It’s a bit darker than the original baby blue, but I like the new shade better. And the color transition is barely visible. (Sorry, they’re not the best photographs. I’ll try to take some better ones).
Of course I didn’t manage to get this project knit up in time for munchkin #1 to wear. The hat was already small for his head when she got the gift, and I was tied up with a whole bunch of wips at the time. But I dug this out in time to finish it up for munchkin #2 - who should be due any day.
