Notes

This was a KAL in the German Knitters in the US group - thank you Christiane for the awesome pattern! I love love love this shawl, and I’ve gotten so many compliments already!

My original plan was to knit the shawl in two different shades of blue (see the last picture), but after Christiane’s advice I decided on the strong green of the Petersilie as the contrast to the blaue Tinte lace (held doubled). I ran out of the blaue Tinte lace during Part V - probably because of my extra repeats, so I used some extra blaue Tinte in 100%. Since I’ve had a few questions about my yarn usage (remember, I added extra repeats! - see more information below), here’s a simplified explanation about the yardage used:

main color in lace, held doubled (Wollmeise blaue Tinte lace): 1770 yds
plus a bit more main color in fingering, held single (Wollmeise 100% blaue Tinte): 69 yds
ergo: 954 yds main color (blaue Tinte)
contrast color in fingering held single (Wollmeise 100% Petersilie): 257 yds

Using the long-tail cast-on, I had extra yarn of that cast on left, so I added extra stitches. The pattern repeats are 12 stitches wide, so I added 3x12 extra stitches = 456 stitches. If you’re trying to make the stole longer, I’d recommend 4 extra pattern repeats - the math just works out better.

I really recommend using the left twist option instead of the sl2 wyib option. It really looks better. If you’re unsure about how to do the left twist, here’s a good video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jS5HMe3GIYk&feature=pl...

Here are my notes on the modifications to the pattern due to the extra repeats:
Part I (second to last picture) works out exactly as written in the pattern

Part II: you repeat rows A & B until you have 5 stitches (instead of the 9) on the left side of the marker on a RS row. That also means that the following row starts with: K5, remove m, K10 etc.

Part III (third to last picture) has a few modifications. On Row you continue in pattern until the last few stitches - if I remember correctly, you don’t finish the last 22 stitch shell. You have to modify the following rows accordingly (I know that sounds complicated, but it really is straightforward when you’re at that point).

Part IV (fourth to last picture): At the end of Part IV, I had 255 stitches remaining on the left side of the marker with the WS facing). To get to 219 stitches, as in the pattern, Row 4 should read K7, K to the end of the row, and then repeat Row 5 & 6 21 times, instead of 18 times.

Part V (fifth to last picture) has significant modifications since I had 36 extra stitches at the beginning of that part. I basically created another set of 4-row shells, Color 1 ridges, then 2-row shells, and a bit extra garter stitch short rows. If you’re using 4 extra repeats, you would instead create an extra 4 row shells and then 2 row shells. If you reduce the stitches to 219 as per my suggestion in Part IV by knitting extra garter stitch short rows, then just completely ignore these modifications.
Ok, here it goes:
Row 39 (Color2): SL1, K4, (Sl2 wyib, K4)* repeat to m, remove m, turn
Row 40 (Color 2): YO, P4, Sl2 wyif, P4, pm, (Sl2 wyif, P4) to one stitch before end, Sl1 wyif
Row 41 (Color 2): Sl1 wyif, (K4, Sl2 wyib)* repeat to m, remove m, turn
Row 42 (Color 2): YO, Sl2 wyif, P4, Sl2 wyif, P2, PM, P2, (Sl2 wyif, P4)* to one stitch before end, Sl1 wyif
Row 43: (Color1): K1tbl, (K4, LT)* to end, remove m, turn
Row 44 (Color 1): YO, K10, pm, K to end of row
Row 45 (Color 2): K1, Sl1 wyib, (K2, Sl1 wyib)* to m
Row 46 (Color 2): YO, Sl1 wyif, pm, (P2, Sl1 wyif)* repeat to last stitch before end, P1
Row 47 (Color 1): K to m, remove m, turn
Row 48 (Color 1): YO, K10, pm, k to end
Row 49 (Color 1): K to m, remove m, turn
Row 50 (Color 1): YO, K10, pm, K5
Row 51 (Color 1): K to m, remove m, K10, K2tob tbl, K9, K2tog tbl repeat to the end of the row working all previous Sl1 as tbl stitches.
Then knit 3 rows.

Part VI: my buttons were smaller (1/4 inch), so I only made one stitch button holes, and added the upper edgeing button holes as follows:
Row 1: K6, BO1, (K11, BO1)* repeat to 5 stitches before end of the row, K5
Row 2: K5, CO1, (K11, CO1)* using backward loop cast-on]* repeat to 6 stitches before the end of the row, K6
Row 3 &4: K
BO loosely (I used k2tog bind off)

Picking up stitches on the side: I picked up 96 stitches, then knit one row, after that I knit exactly as the upper edging button row.

For those of you interested in what the back of the shawl looks like, picture #10 shows the reverse - lots of reverse stockingette, with a few small garter stitch ridges and bands of green. Not as pretty as the front side, but still wearable, I’d say - pretty, but in a different way.

Phew! I hope that makes sense. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
