Notes

Attempting to redo the pattern to make it toe up!

24 May
Casting on for both socks (though several hours apart).

30 May
Starting the gusset on one sock!

31 May
Finished the gusset, time to turn the heel!

01 Jun
I just realized that the lace pattern on these socks is a mirror image of the pattern as it is intended. So apparently instead of upside down, I should have done the chart upside down and backwards. Theoretically. I’m not going to find out for sure since I’m not redoing these. I’m no good at figuring out spacial things like that (as proven by the way I did the chart in the first place!)

02 Jun
Turned the heel and it is fitting great! Because of the directions I am using to adapt the pattern and the fact that I want to both start and end with a K2 (so the flap sides mirror each other), I am going to be working the K2, P2 heel flap over 26 sts.

Confession time. When I knit in the round, I like having the left needle be one size smaller than the right one. And I just realized that I did not swap out that smaller needle for the correct size when I started knitting back and forth for the heel. I’m almost done with the heel flap, though, and it’s fitting (and looking) great, so I’m just going to keep going. I’ll intentionally repeat the mistake on the second sock. Oops.

05 Jun
Done with the heel and flap on both socks. Just the legs to go!

09 Jun
11 rounds of 2/2 ribbing. Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy bind off. One down, one to go!

10 Jun
Second sock is complete! Soaking and blocking then photographing time! My sixth pair of socks!

CO with Judy’s magic cast on, 20 sts.
Toe:
Rnd 1: Knit 1 round.
Rnd 2: Increased 4 sts next round (at beginning and end of each needle).
Alternate Rnd 1 & 2 until there are 64 sts total.

Foot:
Begin chart (upside-down, starting with row 16 - this means the lace rows are read from left to right).
Repeat chart 2 1/2 times.
On Rnd 9 of chart, start gusset. (Placed marker half way through round to split instep and sole sts.)

Gusset: Rnd 1: Follow chart to marker, K1, M1R, K to 1 sts before marker, M1L, K1.
Rnd 2: Follow chart to marker, K around.
Repeat Rnd 1 & 2 until 90 sts on needle (32 on instep, 58 on sole (on chart row 15)).

Turn Heel 1
Working back & forth
Row 1: Knit to sole stitches; K40, wrap & turn 2.
Row 2: P22, wrap & turn.
Row 3: K to stitch right before wrapped stitch, wrap & turn.
Row 4: P to stitch right before wrapped stitch, wrap & turn.
Repeat rows 3-4 until there are 6 unwrapped stitches remaining.

Next row: K across, picking up and knitting the wraps with the wrapped stitches. After picking up the last wrap on the knit side, K1. Turn.

Next row: Sl 1, p across, picking up and purling the wraps with the wrapped stitches. After the last wrap has been picked up, P1. 16 sts rem on left-hand needle. Turn. There are 58 heel sts total.

Faux Heel Flap
Still working back & forth
Row 1: Sl 1, k1, (p2, k2) until 1 st remains before a visible gap in the stitches. SSK. Turn.
Row 2: Sl 1, k1, p2, k2 until 1 st remains before a visible gap in the stitches. P2tog. Turn.
Repeat Rnd 1 & 2 until there are 33 heel sts left. Do not turn. Begin knitting in the round.

Leg
Working in the round
Follow pattern chart all the way around the leg. When you reach the right side gap, k2tog. (32 sole sts. 64 sts total.)
Knit pattern until leg is 5”. Do 1” of K2,P2 ribbing. Bind off.

  1. Based on Liat Gat’s Basic Toe-Up Socks With a Heel Flap
