This is the 4th pattern I’ve tried with this yarn, each time I run into unfortunate pooling however I think this one might be a winner.

I’ve been dragging my feet on this project some. Mostly because it looks like the change in needle size has made it where, when I finish the 8th wedge, I will still need about half an inch of knitting before I am to the place I need to be to work the heel. Not enough space for a new wedge set, but too much room for plain knitting because of pooling issues with this yarn. I was unsure what to do and thus have been delaying getting there so I didn’t have to make a decision. But I think I’ve finally come up with a solution.

I’ve been wanting to try out a forked short row heel and this could be the perfect chance. It should create a slightly deeper heel, meaning it can be started a little earlier. Since the last wedge will end right about the gusset line on my template, I figure this will be a good place to start the forked heel.

Bad pictures are bad. But this is what I did for the heel:
Worked first half of short row heel as normal (using shadow wraps). Worked until I had 1 unworked st, 10 w&t sts, 12 unworked (middle) sts, 10 w&t sts and 1 unworked sts. (Or, more simply, sts divided as 11|12|11.) (Pic 1)

Work partial plain knit row so stitches are divided as 6|22|6 (or 1 unworked st, 4 wrapped sts, 1 double wrapped st, 22 unworked sts, 1 double wrapped st, 4 wrapped sts, 1 unworked st). (Pic 2)

Short rowed back to 11|12|11. (Pic 3)

Worked on row of plain knitting, w&t in first and last previously unworked sts. (Pic 4) Worked second half of short row heel as normal.

This created a fabulously fitting short row heel that has a Y-shaped seam (Pic 5, though one arm of the Y is difficult to see as it is entirely in navy). I honestly think this fits me even better than the FLK heel.

These took so long to do! Okay, okay, so I did knit another pair of socks in the middle of working on these, but honestly, they still kind of felt like they dragged. I think the thicker material combined with all the purling made it a bit tougher on my hands than normal so I wasn’t able to get the long, continuous hours I can normally do.

The heel? Fabulous. It fits my foot so perfectly it feels like it was painted on. I think this is a great one for slightly higher instep folks (or at least those like me that it is coupled with a slightly protruding heel bone).
