Notes

I am testing some yarn for a new British yarn company called Three Bears Yarn. I saw this pattern and knew it was perfect to try their cotton blue Aran weight yarn (now officially called Mermaid Cove) on. Once I’ve finished this pattern I’ll be adding a review to my website.

Important Notes about the pattern

Using 3.5mm hook for main parts, 4mm hook for eyes and spikes.

Following pattern although I’ve made one difference, I’m making it using the back loop only.

Found out back loop only changes the dimensions so I took out some of the sc rows (row 9-19). I did sc rows up to 15 instead and then continued the instructions from row 20 onwards.

Today I got to row 23 today. I just need to embroider the face expression before starting to stuff my monster before I continue with the next steps.

I decided I needed to re-stitch on the eyes as it didn’t look as good as I wanted, much happier now I have re-done them.

I was also looking at where I had got to yesterday and the dimensions were not looking right. I think choosing to do this pattern in back loop changed the dimensions. To correct this I removed a few of the SC rows and I’m now going to continue from row 17 and I need to follow round 20 onwards. I should now hopefully have the right dimensions but I’ll have to continue now and see.

The dimensions are still not right so I’ve gone back to the SC rows and removed a few more. Now row 15 is the last SC row and I’ll now carry on with instructions from row 20 onwards. Fingers crossed this now works and it looks right. It worked and I finished this part :) and I’ll include some photos of this stage now.

I’m doing the spikes tonight, using a 4mm hook to get a better size spike. Followed pattern but needed to make them slightly bigger to get the right looking size (not sure if doing back loop for the head/body made it bigger, but I did the original size spikes and they looked too small in both hooks), to do this I just added an extra row on sc, so sc in each stitch all the way around and then finished as per pattern. I completed 3 of the 5 spikes needed today.

September 9, 2015

Fished the rest of the spikes. I also worked on the hands and feet, which took a long time as I had to re-do them or certain sections to get them right (well to look as good as possible). Still got to finish one foot and do the toe nail on the other. Might also re-do one of the arms but not sure yet. Either way not too long till I sew the pieces on and have a finished monster :).

September 10, 2015

I finished off the other foot today and then I went to start adding the white toe nails to each foot. Sadly I had to stop as I was feeling to ill to continue today :(.I hope to have my monster finished very soon though, hopefully in the next day or two. Really looking forward to seeing him complete.

September 12, 2015

I was able to finish adding the white toe nails on the feet today :). I also went back to the arms and did another, hoping I’d end up with a better matching pair. I didn’t but I was really happy with the new one I’d made so I undid one of the others and re-did it. I then ended up with two arms I was happier with :D.

I then had enough time to sew the arms onto the head/body before packing away for bedtime. Tomorrow I hope to have this monster finished as I just need to sew on the spikes and legs now :). It’s taken longer due to how ill I am but I’m eager to get this monster finished.

September 13, 2015

Working hard today to see if I can get this monster finished, I’m sewing on any remaining parts.

September 14, 2015

I worked late into the night so it’s technically the 14th now although it’s just gone 3am in the UK.

Finally finished my monster and over all I’m really happy with him. It was hard work getting him just right but I’m pleased with how he has turned out.

I have added one finished photo collage of the monster and I’ll be adding better photos soon, as well as how much yarn I used. It’s time for sleep now but just wanted to quickly update this project to finished.

I’ll be back again soon :) and don’t forget I’ll be doing a blog review as I made this monster to test out some new cotton yarn from a new company called Three Bears Yarn.

September 14, 2015

New photos added :). Just the yarn amounts I used to add now, which I hope to update later. Blog post will be ready in the next few days!

September 19, 2015

The blog post reviewing this yarn is now live, to see it click the blog post tab at the top right hand side (next to photos tab).

I’ll get the yarn amounts updated soon, sorry for the delay.

September 22, 2015

Yarn amounts now updated :).

My sample yarn ball was 47g and I used 40g making this project. Three Bears Yarn told me my 47g sample was 80m, so from my calculations I used approx 68 metres for this project.

For the mouth, teeth and toe nails I used some 4ply yarn I had in stock (DMC Natura Just Cotton) however I didn’t weigh these yarns, it would have been very little though.
