CO as directed on US 6 with recommended stitch count.

It seemed the mitts would turn out bigger than I preferred so after the cuff and one pattern repeat I switched to US 5 needles.

Still looked a bit big for my hands so when I began the 3rd pattern repeat I decreased 2sts on the moss stitch palm - one at the beginning of the moss and one at the end.

I didn’t end up with 12 sts on each side (because I forgot that I had already decreased on that side. So just follow the directions and fudge out the count for grafting.

I have long thumbs and was using a smaller needle so my thumbs are seed st 20 rnds, decrease rnd, then run yarn through.

I decided to take the thumb off after 4 repeats (instead of 5), but since I already decreased on the palm I only took off (and cast on) 7 sts (instead of 8).
