No idea whether this is going to work or not…

Using 3.25mm needles, which I think is equivalent to imperial UK size 10.

Using DK yarn, which I know is not equivalent to 1940s 3-ply. the ball band gives 5.5 sts to the inch on 4mm needles, so I should get more than that on 3.25mm… whether it’ll actually fit is anybody’s guess!

The moss stitch version says to use 2 strands held together… should the stocking-stitch version say this too? In which case, DK should be roughly the right weight of yarn…

It turned out the perfect size, but I ran out of yarn half way through the band! Let’s just call it a “design feature”, shall we? ;)

Fits perfectly, is really warm and comfortable, might even knit it again with the right amount of wool!
