January 20 - started this project last night, very pleased with the suggested buttonhole, in seed stitch as given, it makes a Very Tidy Buttonhole indeed…

January 26 - I was worried that I might not have enough yarn (despite the fact that the listed amount of yarn in the skein is supposed to be 560 yards and the pattern only takes less than 300, I am almost out of yarn and only halfway done) and then it occurred to me that perhaps I put the yarn into two yarn balls because it exceeded the capacity of my winder! Sure enough, there was the other half in the box of blue yarns…

January 28 - working my way around the short row section in preparation for knitting the final seed stitch border, and the final portion is not lying as smoothly as the rest, the part where you pick up stitches is more lumpy than the other side of the front. Not sure what is causing this, and have tried several ways/spots of picking up the stitches with equally unsatisfactory results. Subtly displeasing, though I am sure it will make no difference in the final appearance, it feels wrong. The section of the instructions that deals with the short row “bib” part of the project is the one that is the least clear to me, and that I am frustrated with

January 29 - if I make this again, I will do some research about borders and about short rows on outside edges. I chose to make up this pattern as written, with the seed stitch border. Seed stitch is very pretty, but also very tedious, and I have had a difficult time keeping the increases in pattern. In the future, I would choose a different border pattern for the lower edge that would still prevent rolling, but allow for smooth increase transitions

I frogged the border and am starting it over with no increasing, as the finished border as I knit it previously was all wavy, as in too many stitches for the length of the edge… I would have thought that seed stitch would pull in more than stockinette, but instead is seems to expand. Hoping that the new iteration of the border will look better. Not thrilled. It must be user error, as there are plenty of nice looking cowls on the pattern page…

February 1 - after re-knittng the border, I decided to cast off with a picot edge, to add a bit of texture and additional weight. The tutorial I used was here:
