Had to Change the Pattern and Hook Size

I had to adjust the hook size and pattern a bit to get the right fit and length!

• The pattern called for a US H/8 (5 mm) hook with a gauge of one 9 Double Crochet Fan measured 2 inches in width and 1.5 inches in height.

• I used the H hook and followed the pattern and had the same gauge. The hat turned out to resemble a peacock hat for a baby… reminded me of a baby bonnet. I honestly do not see how this fits the model in the photo….

• I went up a hook size: Used I/9 (5.5 mm) hook. Followed the directions and again the hat did not fit my head.

• I went up to the next hook size: J/10 (6.0 mm). I followed the pattern. The hat fit my head this time! YAY! At this point I was beyond frustrated how many times I had to frog my work…. so when it finally fit the top of my head I was so excited! The only problem was the length… the hat was not long enough…

To fix the length issue I followed the pattern for Rounds 1-15. I repeated Rounds 12-15 two more times after to make the hat longer so it would cover more of my head. Anyone who knows me knows how much hair I have and that it takes a big hat to cover my lovely long locks. So my Hat looked like this:

I did rounds 1-11 as written,
12 (was round 8 repeated) - as written
13 (was round 9 repeated) - as written
14 (was round 10 repeated) - as written
15 (was round 11 repeated) - as written

Then I added two extra repeats of rounds “12-15” which is equivalent to rounds 8-11 repeated. So essentially I added 8 rounds to my hat which is equivalent to 4 fans of the pattern:

Round 12, 13, 14, 15, 12, 13, 14, 15

Round 16 and 17 were completed as normal after my extra rounds to increase length were completed.

Round 18 was done as written in the pattern errata found here:

“There is an error in Round 18 of the pattern.
Round 18 should read: Ch 3, (V-st in next sc, ch 2, sc in center dc of next fan, ch 2) 8 times, V-st in next sc, ch 2, join with a slip st in first ch of rnd. You now have 72 sts.
In other words: On round 18 you do not have to sc over a ch-5 loop as written in pattern (because there is no ch-5 loop to crochet over). Other that that, Round 18 is correct.”

Rounds 19-22 were completed as written.

Wove the ends in and took photos!
