Notes

This plane has had more than its 15 minutes of fame! It was displayed at the 2016 Maths Craft Festival at the Auckland Museum and featured on One News in a piece by Will Hine (see photo). In early 2017 it was featured on the Radio New Zealand website after I was interviewed about Maths Craft.

To make this plane, I cast on 16 chain stitches and crocheted for 29 rows. The final row contains 3,165 stitches and measures 12.66 metres in length. The whole plane is made up of 18,910 stitches and over half a kilometre of yarn.

(You can calculate all of these numbers using a geometric series where the first term in the series is the number of chain stitches you cast on and the common ratio is the increase you used: in other words if you increase one stitch every N stitches, the ratio is N+1/N.)
