I added a texting thumb hole on the right thumb by adding a button hole on the 3rd round of the thumb. At the end of the round, I knit the last two stitches together and added 3 YO’s. In the following round, I just knit into the first YO in order to make a large button hole to accommodate a large thumb.

I also made these a bit larger than the pattern. I used a 10.5 needle and add 4 stitches to the circumference and a few rows in length in the mitten top and the thumb.
