6/28/12: My mother sewed me a blanket many years ago that had a Raggedy Ann and Andy print over it. I’ve had this blanket on my bed ever since and this last year it has shown considerable wear and tear. It is a sad, sad thing to happen!

That’s why the blanket to replace my special blanket from the past, is going to need to be spectacular. (By my standards, anyway!)

So when I got a chance to visit my local yarn store on Memorial Day weekend, I decided it was time to start making a throw for my bed. And I knew just the design to make it “spectacular.” I few weeks earlier I came across the extraordinary projects that were created using the African Flower Hexagon pattern that was printed in an African craft magazine. I’ve never been a huge fan of multi-colored motifs (some remind me too much of the color choices from the 70s; they just don’t work with me), until I saw the pillow that was crocheted by this ravelry member. As soon as I spotted the colors in the pillow, I loved it. And I just can’t believe I love it. I’ve been a cool-colored person for years and never ever been drawn to oranges and pinks like I did with this pillow.

So anyway. I walked into the yarn shop with a mission and bought up a bunch of Plymouth Encore Worsted in a fuchsia, gray, white, brown, and orange sherbet color. (I am a sales clerk at a roadside farm stand and I’m always happy to see a customer come in and speed through their shopping like they know exactly what they want--just like I demonstrated at the yarn shop. I felt pretty good about it!)

Besides the Encore yarn, I’m using a few yarn scraps in this project just to add variety.

Right now I have about 14 motifs crocheted and stitched together. I followed the instructions I found on the Heidi Bear blog to make the motifs. It took me awhile to make sure I was reading her instructions correctly because the steps were split up considerably.

I actually ended up compiling written instructions for me so I could get an easy, portable version to follow. I’m thinking of posting it on my blog as soon as I can.
