Notes

I am following the pattern for the medium sock using the short cuff. I chose Ella Rae lace merino because it is a finer yarn with good stitch definition. The color reminds me of old white cotton, the color cotton achieves after 50 or so years.

Summary

  • There is an error in the pattern. The pattern indicates that there will be 54 stitches after completing the picot row when there will actually be 64 stitches.
  • Top of heel as follows: Knit 17 stitches in the twisted rib pattern, twin the next stitch and turn. Knit 33 stitches in the twisted rib pattern; twin the next stitch; turn. Continue knitting in the twisted rib pattern until there is only 1 stitch before the twinned stitch; twin the next stitch and turn. Repeat until there are 9 pairs of twinned stitches on each side of the heel.
  • I’m doing the bottom of the heel as follows (top of the heel has 9 twinned wraps on each side):
     - knit the first row in the twisted rib pattern until the first pair of twinned stitches. Knit these 2 stitches together. Place a shadow wrap in the next stitch (there will be three stitches going through the mother stitch). Turn. Remaining rows will be in stockinette.
     - purl back to the first twinned stitch, purling the 2 stitches together. In the next stitch do a shadow wrap, so that there will be three stitches through the mother stitch. Turn.
     - knit back to the first wrap (3 stitches in one), knit the three stitches together ow wrap the next stitch; turn.
     - purl back to the first wrap (3 stitches in one), purl the three stitches together ow wrap the next stitch; turn.
     - repeat the last two rows until all wraps are worked; continue with the pattern.
  • I have seen comments that the twisted purls aren’t necessary, but they are. They are used to tighten up the stitch above a YO. This helps the YO maintain a round shape rather than forming a more teardrop shape when combined with a non-twisted stitch above the YO.
  • Medium foot chart has a small error. The chart numbering skips row 74. The chart itself appears to be correct.
  • Changed the last sskpo to a cdd. Since this is the last triple decrease at the toe, I thought it would look better with a centered decrease.
  • I added one more decrease row to the chart, so row 80 is a decrease row.
  • Skein started with 98 grams. Completed socks used 67 grams.

Journal

2012-04-19: Started sock. Cast-on 120 using the German twisted cast on. The picot row pattern takes 15 stitches and converts it to 8 stitches. This results in 8 picots for 64 stitches in the cuff.

2012-04-28: Completed 1 lace cuff on US 00 needles. The cuff is pretty tight and barely makes it over my heel. I’m going to do the second lace cuff using US 0 needles to compare. When I compare the gauge required on this sock to my gauge from my Spring Green Sock, it looks like I’ll need to do the body of this sock on US 1 needles instead of US 0 needles.

2012-04-29: Completed sock cuff 2 using US 0 needles. This cuff fits over my ankle. I’m going to complete some of the leg pattern using US 1 to make sure the leg fits before ripping out my US 00 cuff.

2012-04-30: Ripped out 00 lace cuff and re-knit using US 0 needles.

2012-05-03: Completed 27 rows of the leg chart for my left sock leg.

2012-08-17: Completed row 41 of left leg. Tried on and it is really hard to get over my foot. I need to up the needle size on the leg. I’ll move on to right leg.

2012-08-31: Complete 3 rows on right leg using US 1.

2012-09-02: Complete 7 rows on right leg using US 1. Need to increase needle size.

2012-09-03: Move to US 1.5 needle size on row 8 and continue knitting right leg. Completed 55 rows, the entire leg chart. Moved back to left leg and ripped back so to row 8. Continued with US 1.5 on row 9.

2012-09-04: Complete chart for left leg.

2012-09-05: I’m changing the heel shortrows to use the shadow wrap technique. Rearrange stitches on needles so that the 37 ribbed gusset stitches (from wrapped YO to wrapped YO) are on one needle and the remaining stitches are on the other needle. The end of the leg chart is in the middle of the ribbed gusset. Knit 17 stitches in the twisted rib pattern, twin the next stitch and turn.

Complete knitting both heels.

2012-09-06: Complete gusset section on both socks.

The medium sock length is 9” at a gauge of 12 rows per inch. My gauge is 13 rows per inch. I have 68 rows to go or 5.25” (@12 rows/inch i would have 5.4”). My current length from heel to end of gusset is 2 7/8”. If I knit the foot as written, my foot length would be 8 1/8”. I’m going to drop a lifeline and knit the foot chart. If the length is incorrect, I can rip.

2012-09-07: Starting the foot pattern leaf section for the left foot. I switched to a US 1 needle at row 43 to reduce the length of the toe for a better fit.

2012-09-14: My right foot is into the toe “leaf” section and its obvious that the toe will be too long for my foot. I’m going to re-chart the relationship between the toe pattern and the toe decreases before continuing.

2012-09-21: Completed adjusted toe pattern. I finally just cut the decrease section out of the pattern and aligned it with the leaf pattern. This adjustment saves me 6 rows with a reduction of about 1/2 inch in overall length.

2012-09-27: I started knitting the right toe from my chart and realized I had created an adjusted toe for the Small sock. Oops. Created a toe for the Medium sock and started the right toe again. (there is an error in the medium foot chart. The row numbers skip row 74. No biggy.)

Completed toe of right sock. I added one more decrease row beyond the chart. Toe is kitchenered and ends are woven in. Moving back to left sock.

Completed left sock knitting. I wanted the socks completed and blocked by the 28th, so I blocked the left sock before weaving in the ends.

2012-09-28: Ends woven in.

Next Time

  • If I use Ella Rae again, do cuff on US 1 and body of sock on US 1.5.

  • Change the order of the toe decreases. I would do a SSK on the right side of the toe and a K2TOG on the left side of the toe.

First Time

  • Lots of unique stitches in this pattern.
