Notes

The inspiration for this shawl is the Blue Morpho (Morpho menelaus) butterfly which is a member of the Nymphalidae family. Picture of the blue morpho butterfly is from Wikipedia.

Summary

  • Main color is the netting color; contrast color is the welts. This is opposite of how I would think of them.

  • You must catch the main color between rows 2 & 3 of the welt.

  • Pattern calls for 32 welts (5 initial welts plus 27 of the D-welt combination.

  • When I count welts, I’m including the starting welt.

  • At the 33rd welt. Shawl is about 45” across, unblocked. I’m doing an intermediate block of the shawl to see how big it is at this point. Its blocked out to about 60”, which will spring back a bit.

  • I completed 41 welts (counting the starting welt).

  • On my final welt, I completed 3 rows of the welt then bound off on the last row using Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off.

Journal

2014-03-09: Start shawl casting on using GTCO. Complete through welt 3.

2014-03-10: Complete through welt 20.

2014-03-11: Complete through welt 27.

2014-03-12: Complete 33rd welt. Complete an intermediate block. Starting width, end to end is 45”. After blocking its 60”, end to end. My plan at this point is to do 40 welts.

2014-03-13: Complete 36th welt.

2014-03-14: Complete 41st welt and bind off. Blocking now.

Next Time

  • Create longer netting sections.

  • Decrease on the row end opposite of the netting. The shape created is odd, a bit like a right triangle combined with a crescent. I’d like to get rid of the excess material (the right angle end).
