A hat to match my sprites…

Journal

2014-07-29: Cast on 72 stitches using GTCO on US 7 (4.5mm) needles. Join in the round. Knit 1 1/4” 1x1 ribbing. Switch to US 8 (5.0mm) needles and knit one more round in 1x1 rib.

2014-07-31: Worked through intarsia section using the YO method -- really ugly and its too big anyway. So I’m ripping back and starting again.

2014-08-03: Start again… Cast on 64 stitches using GTCO on US 7 (4.5mm) needles. Join in the round knit 8 rows 1x1 rib. Switch to US 8 (5.0mm). Knit 10 rows stockinette.

2014-08-04: Complete base hat. Knit a face piece on US 8 (5.0 mm) needles. Its too loose so I’m ripping it out. Start a sample ear using the green to get it right.

2014-08-06: Bought a second skein of the hand paint and started the ears.

2014-08-07: Completed knitting both ears & face. Stitch face and ears to hat. Weave in ends.

Summary

  • The ears are knit on a US 7 with a cast on of 40 using LTCO. The ear can be divided into 4 sections: stockinette; decrease row with decrease on one side of the ear (2 stitches decreased), followed by a knit row; decrease row with decreases on each side of the ear (4 stitches decreased), followed by a knit row; the final row using CDD to reduce stitch count to 2. For my ears, I started with 2 knit rows; repeated section 2, 3 times; repeated section 3 until 3 stitches remained on each needle, ended with the CDD row.

  • Face is knit using US 7 (4.5mm) needles, with fewer rows and stitches.

First Time

  • Intarsia in the round, YO technique. I didn’t like the results, so I abandoned the idea for this hat.
