Notes

This is the first homework assignment. The goal is to compare how different color contrast levels compare in a balanced weave. Each color section must be at least 2” long per the assignment requirements.

I started with this ugly pale yellow yarn. So, I’m going to use bolder yellows, oranges and reds to stripe the scarf and give it some excitement.

Summary

  • Warped using yellow cascade 220, approximately 8 foot long; 66 grams used.

  • Starting weights for weft:
    Yellow: 34 grams
    Daffodil: 44.1 grams
    Pumpkin: 102.1 grams
    sunset: 104.5 grams

  • Ending weights for weft:
    Yellow: 12.4 grams
    Daffodil: 23.8 grams
    Pumpkin: 83.1 grams
    sunset: 83.4 grams

  • Stripes started at 24 “rows” or should i say picks? after a while the size of my stripes was decreasing as I was inconsistent in my weaving. So, I just started measuring.

  • The technique I used for changing colors came from Weaving Made Easy, page 44. I’m not pleased with the results, but I’ll continue the technique to the end and reevaluate at completion.

  • Start of 4th stripe repeat (yellow stripe) used 30 picks to achieve 2”. This is the first stripe with a nice balance, but a tad weft faced. The next daffodil stripe used 28 picks. Not quite as consistent in the number of picks, but my weaving is getting more balanced and my edges are looking good in this section. Lets hope this continues.
Hmm, pumpkin comes in at 26 picks and sunset orange comes in at 27 picks.

  • Machine washed on delicate. the fringe unraveled at the ends. Luckily it was long enough that I could cut most of the unraveling off.

  • Finished size, not including fringe: 72” x 5 1/4”

Journal

2014-09-06: Loom warped. The loom was warped in class. While I participated in the warping, 2 other people also participated. Loom warped across an 8 foot table for approximately an 8 foot warp.

Completed the first three 4 color repeats. It looks ok, but its not great. 28” complete.

2014-09-07: Completed eighth 4 color repeat + one more 2” yellow stripe. 72” complete. Pulled off loom, removed header & footer yarn; tied off fringe with overhand knot. In wash now.

2014-09-08: Trim ends and fringe. Ready for pictures.

First Time

  • Weaving with worsted weight yarn

  • Changing colors in weft

  • Using weft colors different than warp.

Next Time

  • Figure a better way to change colors.

  • Color change needs a 5th color - between daffodil & pumpkin

  • Stripes need to be smaller or need to vary in width.

  • Don’t start stripe colors with the color that is the same as the warp.

  • Don’t machine wash with loose fringe - the cascade 220 unravels at the end.
