#WIPCrackAway Finished Object #5!

This began as an experimental hat inspired by a massive tam worn by the character Harriet Vane in a Lord Peter Wimsey episode. It was the first time I had ever tried to figure out how to reverse-engineer a knitted item, and while I had a lot of fun, and started adding stripes to stretch out the blue yarn, it eventually became clear that I would need a lot more yarn to make anything like a Vane hat. So I knit it to a wearable cap stage, and put it aside to think about it. And forgot it.

Then came #WIPCrackAway KAL and I began pulling out long-neglected projects to either rip or finish. I decided to continue fooling around with this hat, adding features as I went along.

The result: something like a soft, knitted helmet to wear for winter chores in the goat barn. Here’s the hope: the pleated top will keep it from crushing my hair or making me too hot, the ear coverage will be nice on windy days, and the long panel in the back will help prevent snow from trickling down the back of my neck and melting, which is one of the less-pleasant aspects of winter chores.

Plan B: Or perhaps I can rent it out for anyone playing one of the Three Kings in a pageant! :)
