5/26/12: Went up 2 needle sizes from what the pattern indicates, but still used fingering weight yarn.
The first pair I made last year fit my newborn perfectly, and easily stayed on her feet.
This pair was just a tiny bit snug on her feet and she’s nearly 7 months!
The pattern can easily be modified to accommodate larger feet, either by casting on more stitches or using heavier yarn and larger needles.
My next pair will be with sport weight yarn and size 3.00mm (US 2.5) or 3.25mm (US 3) needles.
A pair of socks could easily be finished in a day.
Modifications: used notes from handknitsbysusan to accommodate just one color yarn instead of 2 contrasting yarns. All numbers remain the same, just changing the beginning of the round. (It’s easier for me to see the pattern written out, so I’m writing it down in case others want to see it too.)
