Notes

things on this:

  • it’s too wide. I needed to knit it at least one or two sizes down and then add oodles of darts.
  • it’s too short -- it actually shrunk lengthwise in the wash!
  • hempathy is AWESOME yarn

I wore it in Hawaii with a tank under it which was fine… but I’d rather not wear it with a (visible) tank.

This is not my usual style of top and I generally go for something with more waist shaping. I did add a bit to this but not enough, so there’s a LOT of ease at the waist and below.

Most likely I will undo the bind off and knit the body a bit longer. In reality what I should do is rip back to the space just under the bust and work a bunch of decreases, then knit down to the low waist and work hip increases. I may do this… I should do this… I do like the fabric and the pattern, and I wore it when I learned a hula dance in Hawaii!

12 feb: finished today! short rows on the sides of the collar to bring it in a little bit. washed, dried, and wove in the ends. hope to get photos next week!

4 feb: body done and bound off using Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind-Off. Hooray! This sweater has a lot of ease, I hope it doesn’t grow TOO much with a wash. I LURVE this sweater right now but wish I had started with a smaller size… I think I need a 38 shoulder/neckline and then 40s below.

3 feb: just 3 more rounds and bind off on the body left, then sleeves and probably some garter stitch around the neckline. I am working 3 ridges of garter on the body hem and will work the same on the sleeves.

1 feb: just did a sanity check -- it’s down past my waist (just barely), so a few more inches left on the body. I like the fit (I am not following the pattern fit, I am winging it to what I like). definitely needs a tank underneath it though since it is a bit more low-cut than I meant it to be. I LOVE the fabric the hempathy makes.

31 jan: zooming along. Still don’t think I’ll get it done before Hawaii but I’m giving it the ol’ college try. Knit a couple of inches on it at N’s hockey game yesterday (well, before the game).

29 jan: working on this again, but don’t think I will get it done for hawaii. :) Need about 8” more of the body and then just the sleeves.

5 jan: going to pick this back up once I finish supercowl -- would like to take it to hawaii in february if I can finish it!

19 aug: ok ok, I put it on waste yarn and tried it on because I kept getting nagged that the neckline was WAY too wide. It is a little wide but not too bad. Due to the extra CO at the back, the back sort of sags oddly. I think this is ok… but if it sags forward I am in a world of trouble! The sleeves hold it so it doesn’t it seems.

16 aug: added short rows a few rounds under the end of the feather&fan. I tried this on (sort of) yesterday. I fear the neckline may be too wide (as usual). I guess I should put it on scrap yarn and do a real try-on vs. on-two-needles-oh-crap-I-just-lost-some-stitches try on.

Joined the third ball of yarn.

15 aug: FIXED! Hooray! Now I can knit miles of stockinette. :)

21 jul: this makes me sad. I need hours of relaxing time to sit down and repair the front panel.

10 jun: AHHAHHASHJAHSJAHJSHAJHSJHJHJ!HJH!JH!JH!J

tried reknitting the front panel, did not have good experience with this. Will try again when I am not so freaking frazzled. Cast on two socks instead.

10 jun: OK. I slipped the sleeves onto waste yarn and I am going to take a second circular needle and completely rip out just the front panel and reknit it properly. It shouldn’t be too bad. I think it’s only 10 rows or so.

9 jun: uh. I should have followed the f&f pattern instead of just knitting blindly. Totally forgot about the purl rows and I worked more YO rows than the pattern specifies (every other row). dammit dammit dammit.

8 jun: this is so slow for me mostly due to the 24” needle I have it on. if I take it with me (unsure as of now), I might pack a 32” knit picks options interchangeable needle in pieces and then assemble the needle on the plane. I would like to finish the sleeves once I get to the point where the raglan increases are done.

Oh and -- my stitch counts are TOTALLY off right now due to moving the neckline up and not working all of the increases on the sleeves (since I didn’t want them so puffy) and the back pleating, but I’m still working raglan increases, so I am ‘fixing’ them. They look ok, it’s just sort of odd. I think the reason people say it runs big is because of the back pleating.

7 jun: knit a few rounds last night. Not sure I am going to be able to take this with me on the plane as planned due to minimal space available for spare yarn… sort of bummed about that but we’ll see.

6 jun: worked 18 rows of the second raglan increases instead of 24 -- then cast on 50 st for the neckline and I’ll work the 4 extra inc on the front in the next few rows (basically I just moved the cast on for the neckline up 6 rows-- and cast on 4 fewer stitches for the neckline). I typically like a shorter raglan than usual for my size (distance from my shoulder to armpit is shorter than most patterns), so I’ll be winging the increases there. I joined the second ball of yarn just after the center neckline cast on.

31 may: on the first repeat of the second raglan increases (where only the sleeves get incs every 2 rows). I will be happier once I can co the extra st for the front and work this in the round. :) I may raise the neckline up a little.. not sure yet.

28 may: a few more rows last night. I am not convinced I like the back pleating stuff… I think I have one more +8 increase row and then it’s onto the alternating +4, +8 increase rows.

27 may: the hempathy almost feels like it’s waxed. I worked the increases at the back neck but did not work the increases for the puffed sleeves (though I did do a few extra increases on the sleeves). I really love the neckline on this sweater and raglans are a good mindless knit for me.

26 may: just cast on for the L size since all reports are that it tends to “fit big.” I’ll adjust at the bust if needed. I’m basically just going to work this to a point where it’s all stst so I can take it with me on the plane… enjoying the yarn so far, though it’s only been two rows. :)

queue: thinking about this for airplane travel to Europe in June. I want to take along something small and simple. Probably this and a scarf or something (stuff I can then use if I somehow finish something, however unlikely that is).
