Another project sample for Crochet Twin Cities. February 2020 topic is Broomstick Lace. I am not teaching but am helping with samples. After the class, I will donate tge scarf to CTC for the CGOA Chapter Challenge.

I’m also experimenting with some alternatives to the knitting needle “pin” and I like a plain ordinary plastic ruler best - the red ruler in the picture. Not nearly as clumsy for me as the knitting needle. The fourth and fifth pictures show that loops made with a ruler are almost identical in size to those made over the knitting needle.

The sixth picture shows some other items I tried. The items on the left, top down:

  • Bamboo chopsticks (about five or six) wrapped in masking tape: a bit clumsy
  • Strip of foam board, cut with an Xacto knife and edges reinforced with masking tape: worked well with the advantage of being able to to cut to any size desired
  • Clear plastic ruler: worked well
  • Red plastic ruler: worked well and photographed better than the clear one
  • Wooden Tunisian hook: I did not try broomstick crochet over this but it would work beautifully if your Tunisian hook is one without a “stopper” on the end - so that you can use the end opposite the hook as your pin
  • Plastic Tunisian hook: I did not try this either, same comments as above

The right side of the sixth photo shows some of the various sizes of knitting needles I’ve collected that could serve as broomstick lace pins.
