Tunisian?! How can I resist?

I will use Aran acrylic from my stash. Each square needs around 100 yds (90 mc, 10 cc). 200 yds for the blanket border.

Jayda is using a 5.5mm Tunisian hook but I’m going to go up to 6.0mm.

January 16, 2022

I started the January 12” square in Tunisian Simple Stitch, but my partial ball of Stylecraft Special Aran only got me to row 27 (of 32). Not a problem, I have some Big Twist in Camel downstairs that should be a good substitute.

Yesterday I went through my stash of 100g skeins of Aran acrylic and chose 12 different colors that coordinate, plus dark brown for the join/border. It will be good to use up some of that stash. I really didn’t have many options for color combinations except Fall leaves colors.

When looking for the Camel colored yarn to replace the Stylecraft in my project basket, I came across some more worsted I had stored in the wrong place, including some lovely Teal. That got me off on a tangent of coming up with a different color palette since all the oranges and reds weren’t doing it for me. I’m still fine-tuning, but teal and pink are my favorite colors, so I’m happy with this change.

Square 1 is done and blocked. I made a few modifications (I did the slip stitch row at the end, I worked into both loops on all sides), but nothing major. My square before blocking was almost 12” wide but was shorter. Steam blocking is magic.

This project is hopefully going to redeem the first Tunisian sampler I did that I killed (literally) by using too high heat when blocking. Hopefully this one won’t end up in the bin like that one did.

February 5, 2022

Started the second square today, which is Tunisian Full Stitch, same as the Calliope Cowl I’m doing.

I’m stopping on row 16 and it is definitely going to be very rectangular (considerably wider than 12” and not nearly as tall as wide). I think I will pull it out and do it again with a smaller hook.

Small changes from Jayda’s tutorial:

  • pick up first loops in back bump,
  • on even rows, skip the last space,
  • work into both strands of the left edge
  • slip stitch bind-off for last row

February 13, 2022

I finished the second square today. Going down a hook size was definitely the correct choice. I really like the woven look of the Full Stitch. I steam blocked it to 12” square though that was quite a stretch for the height.

March 5, 2022

March’s stitch is the Purl Stitch which is quite slow but fun when you get the hang of it. I just use the hook to go behind the working yarn, scooping it to the front, which is much faster than moving the left hand from its usual position to put the yarn to the front.

Nicely, this stitch does not curl.

April 3, 2022

This month’s Honeycomb Stitch is one of my favorite Tunisian stitches! I chose the light pink to show the texture off.

May 29, 2022

May’s Knit Stitch is done. Again, it’s amazing what blocking does.

September 30, 2022

I got a little behind on this but just caught up over the last week. I had already done June, but my cat had been using the project basket as a bed and pulled the yarn with his claws. So, now I have finished June again (Double Stitch), July (Reverse Stitch), August (Ribbed Stitch), and September (Basket Weave). Tomorrow I will block them and then I’ll be ready for the October square next Friday.

October 2, 2022

The first nine squares are blocked, photographed, and added to Ravelry. Now I am thinking about joins.

One of my favorite joins is by Rachele of Cypress Textiles, the Continuous JAYG Flat Braid.

I think I’ll do it with the single chain option.

November 5, 2022

I started the Lacy Lattice Stitch square with the light pink but ran out 3/4 of the way through. I ripped it back and alternated the light and dark pinks and I like the effect. I don’t know why I didn’t rip back to the very first row, so there’s a wider stripe of light pink at the bottom, but hey ho.

I plan to do the last square in gray and white so that it’s not just one square that is two-color.
