A sister project to the Bindweed Cardigan, this piece offers the familiar comfort of a triangular shawl combined with beautiful textures. The fabric is richly decorated with a pattern of intertwined cables and nupps inspired by the dance of gentle bindweed plants. Rhythmic and intuitive, the pattern knits up faster than expected.

Bindweed Shawl is worked from tip to tip with increases along one edge for the first half of the pattern and mirrored decreases for the second. Stitch patterns include cables, nupps, and delicate faux cables along the edges. The pattern has detailed instructions on making three different shawl sizes. Directions are both charted and written out. Videos for nupps and cabling without a cable needle are provided.

Sizes: Small (Medium, Large)

  • Wingspan 43 (63, 83)“ / 110 (160, 210)cm plus tassels
  • Depth at the widest point 10 (14, 18.5)“ / 25 (36, 47)cm
  • Shown in size Medium

Yarn

  • For a Small (Medium, Large) shawl: 270 (470, 810)yds / 250 (430, 740)m of worsted weight yarn held single. Can be substituted with fingering held together with lace weight fluff (for ex., mohair or Suri alpaca)
  • Preferably solid, heathered, or lightly tonal colorway to show textures better
  • Sample shawl, size Medium: Cumbria from The Fibre Co. (60% merino, 30% wool, 10% mohair; 3.5oz / 100g, 236yds / 216m), 2 skeins, color White Heather

Needles and hooks

  • US 7 / 4.5mm needles (straight or on a long cable) or the size needed to obtain gauge
  • A crochet hook of a matching size for nupps

Gauge

  • 21 sts and 26 rows in 4” / 10cm in stockinette stitch, blocked (provided for gauge check)
  • 27 sts and 24 rows in 4” / 10cm in cabled pattern, blocked
  • Note that difference in gauge will affect the required yardage and the finished size of the shawl

Construction

  • The shawl is worked flat from tip to tip.

  • Increases made along one side shape the first half of the shawl, and mirrored decreases - the second.

  • The edges feature small faux cables and slipped stitch selvedge.

  • Optional tassels can be added for a more boho-inspired look.

  • The size of the finished shawl can be adjusted by making fewer or more repeats of the pattern. Directions for making three sizes are provided.
