Earthstar is a fun striped semicircular shawl overlaid with a cable motif radiating from a central point in a star shape.

The star is made of a series of wedges which gradually shift into a slip stitch (mosaic) zigzag pattern, then into a lace mesh that can be worked in stripes for a unique 2 colour effect.

The cables are integrated into the knitting, rather than being stitched on afterwards. The shawl is worked in stripes, and the cable lines are made by knitting cables in the working colour as you normally would, then on rows of the other colour those stitches that form the cable line are slipped without being knit. So it’s easier than it looks.

It’s ideal for 2 solids/semi-solids, a gradient and solid, or a pair of dappled gradients, as pictured here.

  • The size of the shawl is somewhat adaptable as the edging lace can be extended a little and extra wedges can be added.
  • Suits fingering to DK weight yarn in any yardage between approx 700-1000m (990-1100y) or skip charts 2&3 for a smaller shawl.
  • The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.

My project page can be found here.

Pictured shawl used 880m (960y) Gobsmacked Four Quarter Fingering, on 3.25 & 3.5mm (US size 3&4) needles, and measures 65x140cm (26x55in) after blocking.

This shawl also has a sister design, Maitri Mandala.
