This design is part of The Cottage Garden Vol. 2 collection, which is inspired by the Hobbits imagined by J.R.R. Tolkien in The Lord of the Rings --  their dwellings, their values and way of life.
It is available both as an individual pattern and as part of this eBook.

This cardigan is the epitome of coziness, with its beautiful shawl collar, textured pockets and faux elbow patches. I can easily picture a hobbit wearing it and enjoying a late-morning snack while writing a book of adventures or invitations to a birthday party!

CONSTRUCTION:

This cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down and features knitted-in pockets. The sleeves are separated from the body at underarm level, then worked in the round. They feature textured “faux” elbow patches. Stitches are picked up along the fronts and the neckline to work the shawl collar and button bands in once piece. The shawl collar portion is shaped using German short rows (link to video tutorial in the pattern). The pocket linings require some seaming.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, working short rows (explanations/link to video tutorial provided), binding off.

SIZES:

  • 3mo (6mo, 12mo, 18mo // 2yo, 4yo, 6yo, 8yo, 10yo)

  • To fit chest: 16 (17, 18, 19 // 21, 23, 25, 26.5, 28) inches or 40.5 (43, 45.5, 48.5 // 53.5, 58.5, 63.5, 67.5, 71) cm

  • Garment chest at underarms: 18.5 (20.25, 21.25, 22.5 // 24.75, 26.75, 28.5, 29.75, 32) inches or 47 (51.5, 54, 57 // 63, 68, 72.5, 75.5, 81.5) cm

In general it’s best to go by the child’s actual chest measurement when selecting the appropriate size. The age labels are just general guidelines. You can also choose a size according to how much ease you’d like the garment to have.
