Hypermile* is a symmetrical shawl designed to make the most out of one skein of fingering weight or sport weight wool-based yarn. I wanted something big that would showcase a wild speckled or variegated yarn, or a bright solid yarn that could be worn in the warmer months. I envisioned this shawl as a light cover up, or flash of fun to add to your outfit.

The shawl is knit from side to side, one tip to the other, so there are only 4 stitches to bind off. The pattern is very hackable, but be mindful of how much yarn you are starting off with, and how much yarn you are using for each section. The mesh is created by knitting elongated stitches and then purling them in the wrong order so they cross one through the other.

This pattern requires one skein of wool fingering or sport weight yarn. The samples are knit in Malabrigo Mechita (420 yards/385 meters per 100 grams) in the Renaissance colorway, and Malabrigo Arroyo (335 yards/305 meters per 100 grams) in the Matisse Blue colorway.

The fingering weight version uses 24 inch US size 5 (3.75mm) needles, and the sport weight version uses 24 inch US size 6 (4mm) circular needles. You will need a scale, and blocking materials including blocking wires are strongly recommended.

The fingering weight sample measured approximately 68 inches by 16.5 inches after rebounding post blocking. The sport weight sample measured approximately 62 inches by 15.5 inches after rebounding post blocking.

A big thank you to my test knitters for this pattern!
