19.05.2020

  • My initial square using a 5.5mm hook was quite loose and close in size to the CAL square. I didn’t like the feel of it so frogged and changed to a 5mm hook.

  • I wanted to do all the squares, but because mine were smaller than the original I would need more squares but didn’t have enough yarn for that

Modifications made:

  • I split block 5 into two pieces - using the pattern but working only two block rows. This was to add length as each block is approx 16” and the 2 blocks make it almost 32”. When I add this half block of blocks 1-8, I add almost 8” to the length..
  • block 1 - I used only the first block row to make a runner that I will put in the middle of my blocks to add about 4” to the width
  • ½ block in main colour used 3g
  • ½ block in contrast colour used 4-5g as it is longer by one row..

for the individual square borders, I chose to continue using stash yarn and have used different colours for each square that coordinate with one colour in the square.

Each border round the square uses 10g of yarn using the same 5mm hook

when joining the pieces together, I chose the zipper join in the main colour. Then I realized that because I split one square into half and also did a long stripe, my stitch count would be off by 6 sts accounted by one each from each piece’s corner.. especially since I was joining the squares to the strip as the middle of the afghan

28.05.2020

Border is the linen stitch border which ties in all the colours.

  • I decided to alternate the sc rounds with rounds of hdc, ch1
  • for the last round of sc, I made 1sc,1hdc,1sc at the corners
  • I did 5 rounds total which added 1 inch to each side.
